As the world’s largest B-Corp-certified travel company with social good a fundamental of its operations, the new itineraries go ever further afield with more ethical wildlife adventures, an increase in activities supporting Indigenous communities and female-run businesses, and fresh ways to discover the world’s most iconic destinations.

Through these Intrepid provides more meaningful ways to forge connections while making a positive impact on the places visited.

“After one of our most successful years in over 30 years of business, we are very excited to share the thoughtfully designed itineraries debuting in 2023,” says Zina Bencheikh, managing director for Europe, Middle East and Africa.

“I am extremely proud of the Intrepid team for continuing to reach new heights, bringing to life the adventure, natural beauty and hidden stories within some of our most unique tours to date.”

The collection includes new tours, destinations and activities added to existing itineraries and among the highlights are:

Pakistan Expedition (from £3,650 per person)

Intrepid is introducing Pakistan as a new destination to its portfolio in 2023 with this new 15-day adventure that will take travellers through the enigmatic country. Visitors will learn about Pakistan’s past, present and future, explore the region’s remote mountain villages during various hikes, visit female-led community projects, meet local families in Shimshal and experience the food, customs and culture that make the destination so unique.

Rwanda Gorilla Naming Ceremony & Uganda (from £3,985 per person)

This brand-new trip features a momentous celebration of conservation success modelled off a centuries-old tradition in Rwanda – a naming ceremony for the baby gorillas born in the country’s Volcanoes National Park over the past year. Intrepid travellers will also trek alongside gorillas in Uganda, learn how the human-wildlife conflict is being tackled, enjoy several game drives and a boat cruise to spot wildlife, and be joined by a field veterinarian from The Gorilla Doctors for an exclusive fireside chat, all while knowing that a portion of the trip cost supports the important work they do.

Vanuatu Expedition: Land Diving Festival (from £1,395 per person)

On this five-day adventure, travellers will visit this South Pacific destination to witness and understand the cultural practices of the land-diving Indigenous people of Pentecost Island, widely considered the original bungee jumping. Watch the jumpers haul themselves off the platforms as part of a ritual that functions as a coming-of-age for young men, a blessing of the earth for upcoming harvests, and a nod to an age-old Pentecost legend.

Best of Costa Rica (from £2,110 per person)

On this eight-day trip exploring the beaches, rainforests and wildlife of Costa Rica, travellers will now be able to visit the Térraba Indigenous community, a matriarchal society that has lived off the land for more than 500 years, with the women responsible for passing information down through the generations. Guests will learn how to carve their own wooden mask, then share a local lunch with the group.

Peru Expedition: Trek the Great Inca Road (from £2,925 per person)

In partnership with fellow B Corp SA Expeditions, Intrepid has helped develop sustainable operations along the Inca Trail’s rarely visited and equally magnificent neighbor, the Great Inca Road. Intrepid is the first global tour operator to bring travellers along part of this 25,000-mile ancient highway, which has been regarded as one of the world’s greatest engineering feats, traversing the UNESCO World Heritage Site alongside a traditional llama caravan.

Israel & Palestine Real Food Adventure (from £2,520 per person)

One of Intrepid’s food-focused adventures is back for 2023, this time with a new experience for travellers to enjoy: a visit to Taybeh Brewing Company in the West Bank run by the Middle East’s first female brewer, which has been crafting agers and ales since 1994 while simultaneously evolving to become a sustainability champion in the region.

UCPA, a not-for-profit organisation opening up sports for everyone no matter what their income or cultural background, has top value holidays in some of  the biggest resorts in the French Alps that offer high altitude skiing.

Available until the end of April, its all-inclusive packages include accommodation (typically shared rooms with four persons), breakfast, lunch and evening dinner –  huge, fresh and healthy buffet feasts, full area lift passes, ski or snowboard equipment rental and for many holidays, instruction too.

For dates in April, prices start at around £450pp (Tignes, four day ski break) all-inclusive, whilst a fully guided off-piste experience in Val d’Isère costs from £998pp for seven nights, including ski rental and avalanche safety equipment, full-board accommodation and lift pass.

Managing director of Action Outdoors, the UK arm of the UCPA, David Robertson, says: “Late season skiing is one of our favourite times to get out into the mountains and our high altitude resorts mean snow conditions and depths are often at their best.

“This year with Easter falling a little earlier, it means good snow conditions are more guaranteed. As spring time takes over, the atmosphere in the centres feels even better than normal, as skiers and snowboarders relax with a drink outdoors in one of the centres bars at the end of the day.

“UCPA is well-known for the social activities after skiing and most guests stay around for that before the huge buffet dinner that has become legendary with our guests”.

April holidays with the UCPA include:

Tignes – Introduction to ski touring, from £917pp including seven nights full board accommodation at the UCPA centre, Tignes, lift pass, instruction, ski touring equipment. Dates, April 8, 15, 22, 29

For confident on and off piste skiers that would like to try touring for the first time.

Val d’Isère – beginners week, from £764pp including seven nights full board accommodation at the UCPA centre, Val d’Isere, lift pass, instruction, ski equipment. Dates, April 8, 15.

All funds generated by the experience will help boost Chester Zoo’s mission of preventing extinction, both through its conservation breeding programmes and field projects, in 20 countries around the world.

And The Lanterns event, which launched on November 11th, has already proved so popular, Chester Zoo had to release another batch of tickets to cope with the huge surge in demand.

A treat that leaves you all aglow, the popular winter evening experience saw over 90,000 visitors in 2019 before the Covid pandemic hit.

Instead of going from paddock to enclosure to see the animals, like a normal daytime trip to the zoo, The Lanterns is a wholly different and unique affair.

Your first encounter a large bright owl circling near a glowing white moon before crossing a rainbow-illuminated bridge.

Children will thrill at the sight of a golden-lit lion, but instead of shaking its mane and pouncing for the kill he gently approaches as though asking to be stroked and petted.

The trail is lit up by hundreds of illuminated animal lanterns, costumed puppeteers and theatrical performers. There is also a visit from Father Christmas and his reindeers.

New features for this year include a life-sized orangutan in a dazzling UV jungle, a giant polar bear overlooking a magical fairy-tale castle and a stunning snow leopard protecting its mountain home.

Meanwhile for those who have been before, this winter the trail also follows a new, longer route.

Scott Manton, Chester Zoo’s Guest Experience Supervisor, said: “The zoo is a spectacular place in the day, but as the sun sets its transformed in to a colourful festive celebration that lights up the night sky as we begin our very own countdown to Christmas.

“This year we’re taking visitors on a magical journey through distant lands, while discovering different animal-themed tales from around the world.

“Delve into a Norwegian fairy-tale as you encounter a multi-coloured, glowing castle towering high in the heart of the zoo and watched over by a huge polar bear.

“Wander through giant lotus flowers and flying dragonflies in a Japanese inspired garden, then earn your stripes with our zebras in an African-inspired display full of colour and music.

“Father Christmas and his fellow reindeer will also be joining the celebrations each night and will be here to spread some festive cheer while guests tuck in to delicious festive treats at our Christmas markets, including Yorkshire pudding Christmas wraps, bratwurst hotdogs and a range of tasty plant-based options, too!”

Scott added: “The Lanterns is a fabulous way for people to take in the magic of Christmas at the zoo – all while knowing they’re also helping our charitable mission to protect some of the world’s most threatened species.”

Extra tickets are now on sale for Chester Zoo’s “The Lanterns” event, which will run on selected dates from Friday 11 November to Friday 23 December with entry slots available from 4pm – 8pm.

Child tickets start from £12 and adult tickets start from just £15. Visit: https://shop.chesterzoo.org/events/the-lanterns-2022.

Warner Bros’ woodland attraction at Arley Hall and Gardens between Liverpool and Manchester, in Cheshire, has been open since last month and every night entertains Potter fans and delighted families.

Now Express.co.uk has headed down to see for ourselves what visitors have been enjoying on the night-time trail that adds some much-needed magic to this gloomy winter.

Straight away we are treated to mulled wine or smoke-topped drinks depending on which Hogwarts house you are in – Slytherin, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw or Gryffindor.

A greeting from one of the Forest’s many helpers and we were on our way, starting the winding tour past magical creatures that takes up to two hours.

En-route you can bow to a Hippogriff, creep past Unicorns, lots of owls and stumble across the jewellery and gold-stuffed Niffler den.

You can even see the Weasley’s flying Ford Anglia car, before you get a chance to conjure up a Death Eater’s dark mark or your own dementor-protecting Patronus charm.

In its second year, the attraction boasts a new feature for those that bring along their own wands – the chance to cast some new spells that you may not have come across in any of JK Rowling’s books, such as one to freeze a lake!

Duelling wizards and witches have the chance to test their skills in combat with a wand battle game, just by the half-way point where you can stop for a hot chocolate or reviving butterbeer drink.

Then it is on into the darker parts of the Forbidden Forest and into evil Aragog’s lair as you are swamped by his brood or ravenous spiders.

And at the end there is a whole Hogsmeade-style village of refreshments to enjoy, from traditional drinks, to butterbeer, toast your own marshmallows, sweets and roast dinners and hog roasts.

It is the perfect pre-Christmas treat and the festive lights will make you still feel that post-Halloween magic is lingering in the air for a few more weeks. Bring your wands, cloaks, waterproofs and maybe a pair of wellies!

Tickets are now available for the experience until December 4th.

For more information visit the Forbidden Forest website.

Martin Dorey is an expert at escaping the crowds for an England or Wales staycation. He spoke to Express.co.uk about his new book and shared his advice for new campers.

Martin said a key error can come from a lack of preparation for caravan or motorhome holidays.

He said: “Caravans and motorhomes have a lot of tanks to get to grips with. There’re water tanks, freshwater tanks, waste tanks and toilet tanks.

“Obviously everything has to be emptied and refilled. So one of the things that’s really useful to do before you go is think, ‘How do I empty the grey waste tank?’

“Learn how to do it quickly and easily. Because if things go wrong, it can turn into a nightmare.

“People should practise it at home and get used to it, so it’s not a disaster because as you can imagine toilet stuff going everywhere, it can be pretty unpleasant.”

Martin is an expert at getting off the grid in the UK but he said it’s important to keep track of some facilities.

He said: “Look up places to empty your waste. Everyone gets excited about going to Scotland and being wild and free.

“But you do have to empty your tanks in the right place and so knowing where those places are is really useful.”

Martin added: “People sometimes get really excited about going off and then realise there’s an issue when they’ve gone.

“Recently, we went to the Pyrenees to go snowboarding in our van. We had a heater and we didn’t know if we had enough power to run the heater all night.

“So we had a really restless night worrying about it. And in the end it was fine but if we’d worked that out before, we wouldn’t have had to worry about it.”

Preparation is key when it comes to a camping or motorhome holiday and could help to avoid a lot of problems further down the line.

Last year, many Britons chose to take a staycation as holidaymakers struggled with Covid rules.

Martin said this year is unlikely to be as busy but it still pays to plan ahead before leaving for a staycation.

He told Express.co.uk: “Last year, you couldn’t get a restaurant unless you booked but you have to kind of roll with it.

“Book ahead, plan ahead, maybe try to be less spontaneous, which is horrible to think because that’s what we all love.

“But you get the good spot by planning and if the weather picks up it should be a really good year for everybody again.”

The UK can become extremely busy over the summer months but Martin said it’s still possible to find peace and quiet.

He said: “There were some amazing moments walking the undercliff in Lyme Regis, which is absolutely fantastic.

“There was a landslip there about 150 to 200 years ago so all the vegetation is like virgin forest.

“If you walk through the forest, it’s just incredible. It’s really quiet and there’s no agriculture and no cars and very few people.”

Britons will get an extra bank holiday to celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. If the weather’s good, it could be the perfect time to head out on a walk.

Which? Travel surveyed almost 2,000 of its members to find the UK’s best walks that don’t take more than a day to complete.

Botallack Mine Walk, Cornwall

The Botallack Mine Walk in Cornwall is an easy walk which was rated particularly highly for peace and quiet.

A Which? spokesperson said: “This short and straightforward walk, takes you through the relics of Cornwall’s industrial past and into its conservation-conscious present.

“Where the cliff was once blackened by the dust and smoke of mining, there now lies heathland and rare flowers.”

Worcestershire Beacon Circuit

The Worcestershire Beacon Circuit takes in the Malvern Hills in a gentle route with stunning views.

The spokesperson said: “Rather than going to the top of the Worcestershire Beacon, the highest peak in the Malvern Hills range, this gentler route circumnavigates its lower slopers and provides panoramic views of the Worcestershire Plain, Severn Valley, the rolling hills of Herefordshire and distant Black Mountains.

“Refill your water bottle en route at one of numerous springs, it’s purified by percolation through fissures in the ancient rocks.”

Rhossili Headland, Wales

Rhossili was the best rated walk in Wales and takes hikers on a trail above the world-class beach.

The spokesperson said: “This short, circular route takes you along the clifftop, passing the remains of an Iron Age fort and a 12th-century open field strip system known as The Vile.

“Below is the four-mile stretch of beach with the remains of a shipwreck revealed at low tide, the dramatic promontory, Worms Head, and the sparkling sea, which in the summer is peppered with surfers bobbing in the waves like seals.”

Rhossili Headland was given five out of five stars for scenery by Which? members.

Anstruther to Crail, Scotland

This stretch of the Fife Coastal Path was rated as the best walk in Scotland in the Which? Travel survey.

The spokesperson said: “The Fife Coastal Path knits together a string of fishing villages, each one a tumble of cobbled alleyways and whitewashed cottages.

“This section is the most popular, starting at the former herring port, Anstuther, before heading off along rocky shores with views across the Firth of Forth to the Isle of May and Bass Rock.”

The route is easily navigable by following the coast and was rated highly for peace and quiet by Which? members.

Wells Beach and Pinewoods Walk, North Norfolk

Britons looking for a longer route could try this pretty walk in Norfolk which stretches around 7.5 miles.

A spokesperson said: “Starting in Wells, this easy and fairly flat route, will take you past golden sand dunes, a bustling harbour and through tall pine trees in woodland.

“Once half-way, the mile-long beach is ideal for a picnic lunch and dip in the sea before looping back to Wells.”

The route was given four out of five stars for food and drink and Britons could enjoy a well-earned fish and chips at the end of their walk.
