Acapulco glamour at Banyan Tree Cabo Marques

Let’s face facts: Americans are not asking for Acapulco. And based on the news reports over the past several years, who can really blame them? Its image, in the eyes of U.S. travelers, has been tarnished.

And that’s a shame, because it still is a vibrant part of Mexico’s tourism landscape. Once the most glamorous, jet-setting beach town in Mexico, the history of A-list elite is still palpable. Take, for example, the elegant cliffside hotels and mansions, the glittering, Miami-esque Costa de Oro and the sweeping panoramic views from any vantage point around the bay. Movie stars, politicians and bigwigs alike would flock to the coast of Acapulco to soak up the glamour underneath the Pacific Mexican sun.

Sadly, that’s not the norm anymore, but there is still one resort that is holding onto the luxury and reputation of Acapulco past. The Banyan Tree Cabo Marques, perched atop a cliff overlooking nearby Puerto Marques Bay, is everything luxury travelers should expect from a glamorous visit to Acapulco.

Visitors are met in true Banyan Tree fashion: an open-air lobby with seemingly unending views from the main entrance out toward the horizon. The lobby sits directly atop a craggy cliff, with dramatic drops to the sea below.

Designed to be evocative of a Thai-style village, 45 private villas speckle the hillside down the cliffs toward the bottom. The villas are surrounded by the striking mountains and tucked behind private entry gates, range from the far-from-modest Hillside Pool Villas to the sprawling Ocean Front Spa Pool Villas, all with outdoor areas, private infinity pools and luxe amenities. The most impressive villa is Villa Cerezo, which sits at the top of the cliffs with floor-to-ceiling windows, fully equipped kitchen, dining and living areas, a TV room, private office, solarium, terrace and heated swimming pool, all spread out over 14,564 square feet. It has five bedrooms and a capacity for 15 people.

While Acapulco is one of the epicenters of Mexican seafood, Banyan Tree Cabo Marques is a dining center all its own. From Saffron, Banyan Tree’s signature Thai restaurant, to La Dao, serving Mexican cuisine, there are several high-end dining options that pair well with the views over the Pacific coast. There is also Las Rocas Bar & Grill, and the Las Vistas Bar & Lounge for Thai tapas and tropical cocktails.

Acapulco still does thrive as a destination for domestic travelers, and there is a lively nightlife and restaurant scene. All of which awaits guests of the Banyan Tree Cabo Marques, along with one of the most beautiful beaches on the Pacific coast of Mexico.
