Exmoor offers an amazing selection of beaches which offer everything a UK holidaymaker would want, from rockpools and sandcastles. Kate Humble explores the area in episode one of her new show Kate Humble’s Coastal Britain. These are five of the best beaches in Exmoor.

Combe Martin Beach

Combe Martin is home to a sheltered beach which becomes sandy at low tide but is mostly shingle and pebbles at high tide.

The spot is renowned for its wonderful rockpools – so be sure to bring your nets!

Swimming is also good here as it is protected from strong currents.

There is a large car park, toilets and shops to the back of the beach.

Putsborough Sands

One of the finest delightful beaches in the South West, Putsborough Sands boasts three miles of golden sands.

There are plenty of rockpools for children to explore while surfers won’t be disappointed.

Despite this, the beach is usually quieter than neighbouring beaches. It’s also well known for its cleanliness.

There’s also a shop, cafe and toilets.

Lynmouth Eastern Beach

Lynmouth is ideal for keen surfers as it is known as one of the best surf spots in Devon, given the right conditions.

It’s also good for fishing and rock pools.

The views from the cliff above the beach are well worth the walk.

Visitors should look out for dolphins in the sea!

Minehead Beach

If you’re after lots of sand, this sweeping beach is what you’re after. Minehead Beach is great for beach games and building sandcastles.

There’s also a variety of rock pools.

Minehead Harbour is at one end while a promenade and sea wall run the full length of the beach.

There are toilet facilities and a café her are deck chairs and windbreakers are available for hire.

Hele Bay

Found on the outskirts of Ilfracombe is a small beach ideal for those looking for a relatively tranquil day out.

It’s great for relaxing and exploring the rock pools.

While the beach is shingle at high tide it becomes sandier at low tide.

Hele Bay is well equipped for visitors – there is a large car park above the beach where toilets and refreshments can also be found.
