The pretty little seaside town with the UK’s ‘best fish and chip shop’

A tiny seaside town boasts one of the UK’s best fish and chip shops, which even attracted the attention of famous faces.

Aldeburgh in Suffolk is home to the Golden Galleon chippy which ranked as the country’s fourth best in a Times article written by celebrity food experts Grace Dent and Ainsley Harriott.

Dent said the fish and chip shop, located in the town’s High Street is “the best fish and chip shop” in the coastal town.

She said: “The best fish and chip shop in Aldeburgh.

“Which is probably a bad thing because it means as soon as its doors open there is a flood of people dying for the fish and the chips and the mushy peas. Get there early.”

But aside from food, Aldeburgh also has a lot of other attractions to pull in the tourists.

The town is best known for the rainbow of colourful buildings that line its seafront, while its streets are packed with independent shops and quaint cafes.

Despite a population of just under 3,000, Aldeburgh even hosts its own international arts festival, which was founded by former resident Benjamin Britten in 1948.

The town is also home to the unique Martello Tower, which was built to resist a Napoleonic invasion in 1808.

Other historic places of interest in the town include the four-storey Fort Green built in 1824 and converted into a dwelling in 1902, and its Second World War tank trap located in Slaughden Road.

Art lovers can also take in the Scallop, which was built as a tribute to Benjamin Britten by the Suffolk-based artist Maggi Hambling.
