AmaWaterways senior vice president of sales Gary Murphy will retire from his role on April 1 after more than a decade with the luxury river cruise line.
Murphy will be succeeded by Alex Pinelo, who currently serves as vice president of sales.
In a statement, the outgoing executive said that while AmaWaterways has been a passion of his, spending time with his family will now be his priority and is the reason behind his retirement.
“The Murphys are forever attached to Rudi, Kristin and the entire AmaWaterways family, and we look forward to celebrating with AmaWaterways as it continues to set the standard for river cruising around the globe,” Murphy said.
Murphy’s father, Jimmy Murphy, along with Rudi Schreiner and Kristin Karst, co-founded AmaWaterways in 2002. Gary Murphy joined the river cruise line seven years later in 2009 and was appointed to vice president of sales in 2013.
Prior to joining AmaWaterways, Murphy’s career in the travel industry included stints with Group Voyagers in Europe, Brendan Vacations and as vice president of marketing and sales for Miami Air International.
AmaWaterways said Pinelo will continue to lead the company’s sales team and strengthen its relationships with travel advisors and oversee the company’s luxury package offerings, all while the company prepares to launch its 2022 European season in March and a new ship, AmaMagdalena, which debuts in Colombia in 2024.
