Cornwall is known for its stunning beaches which have welcomed an influx of holidaymakers eager to quench their thirst for a holiday over the last year. Though there are over 300 coastal spots to choose from in the region, all boasting the same turquoise waters.

One of these is Mawgan Porth, nestled in a gorgeous cove midway between the popular hotspots of Padstow and Newquay.

Though the region is home to a number of caravan sites, Lovat Parks’ Sun Haven stands out due to its diverse offering.

Whether you’re looking to pitch up in a traditional touring caravan, rent a luxury static holiday home for a week-long family getaway, or dip your toes into the world of vacation homeownership, the site has plenty on offer.

What makes the site even more alluring, though, is its location.

Surrounded by the rolling green hills of the Mwagan Porth valley, when you’re on-site with nothing but the views of vast greenery, Sun Have feels hundreds of miles from anywhere. The good news is, though, that it is actually within walking distance of the seaside village, as well as a stunning sandy beach.

There are also plenty of accessible walks along the clifftops or heading inland towards the countryside.

During our stay, we enjoyed five days in one of the “luxury holiday homes”, which sleep up to six across three bedrooms.

The master bedroom boasts a comfortable double bed with plenty of storage, including shelving and a wardrobe.

For the more glamorous holidaymakers, there’s even a dressing table with a mirror and complimentary hairdryer for use during your stay. The smaller rooms, meanwhile, feature two single beds each.

Whether you are travelling as a family, or with a group of friends, the holiday homes offer plenty of space. There is also more than enough room to bring along your furry friends too, with Sun Haven welcoming dogs on-site to stay.

The accommodation offers one bathroom with a sizeable stand-up shower, as well as a compact en suite attached to the master bedroom.

A large open plan sitting room and dining area offer an area to relax and unwind in front of the state-of-the-art television, or while enjoying a delicious meal.

Budding chefs will be over the moon with the fully kitted out, contemporary kitchen, which comes complete with kitchen utensils, pots, pans, crockery and enough plates to cater for a full house.

On days when the sun is shining, head out onto the wrap-around deck and enjoy dinner at your own private alfresco spot.

The decking area of our accommodation became our favourite sunset spot, thanks to the endless views across the park and surrounding valley.

If you don’t fancy cooking, the good news is holidaymakers don’t even have to leave the site to enjoy a tasty treat.

Sun Haven welcomes a number of rotating pop up local vendors throughout the week, including freshly made burgers, pizza night and breakfast most days.

There are also several local food joints within walking distance. Off the Path is an adorable outdoor cafe just a five-minute walk from the site which promises freshly made to order grub with an almost surreal view over the Cornish natural landscape.

Alternatively, a sun-dappled woodland trail leads holidaymakers directly from Sun Haven to Mawgan Porth’s seafront.

The town itself is home to Cornish Local – a small supermarket offering regionally produced and independent products as well as name brands, as well as a pub, beach cafe, fish and chip shop and seafood restaurant.

On one of the more lazy evenings of our trip, we paid a visit to Catch Seafood Restaurant which offers a delectable range of freshly caught fish dishes, as well as a surprisingly good vegetarian and vegan menu.

While we did not sample any of the fish, due to our dietary requirements, the Catch Vegan Curry scored full marks for both taste and presentation.

As is often the case with seaside retreats, there are also plenty of opportunities to pick up a traditional Cornish ice cream.

The vast sandy beach is a popular retreat for families looking to soak up the rays. Adventure seekers can tackle the waves by hiring a surf or bodyboard. Alternatively, tie up your walking boots and head on one of the many coastline hikes which can be accessed from the beach. In either direction along the South West Coastal Path, whether you head towards Newquay or Padstow, there are breathtaking views of the aquamarine waters below, as well as magnificent rocks, unspoilt beaches and secret coves.

On days where a slower pace is more favourable, there are plenty of onsite amenities to enjoy. Little ones have access to a play park and fairy garden. There is also a café, park shop, communal fire pit, laundry room and WiFi hotspot for guest use. On top of this, traditional touring campers have access to outdoor showers, toilets and washrooms, a kitchen and washing up area, as well as a selection of family bathrooms.

Friendly and welcoming staff are also on-site until around 6pm daily, after which a warden can be contacted via WhatsApp should holidaymakers have any questions or concerns.

Sun Haven promises all the peace and tranquillity of a secluded holiday, but with the comforts and amenities to truly make a home away from home during your stay.
