American Airlines will cut 17 routes at Austin Bergstrom Airport, Cirium flight schedule data shows.

The cuts were loaded into American’s schedule over the weekend and mostly will be implemented between January and March. 

This month, American is flying 37 Austin routes. The count in April will be 20. 

Among the cuts are Albuquerque, N.M.; Kansas City, Mo.; Sacramento, Calif.; Memphis; Oklahoma City; El Paso, Texas; Jacksonville, Fla.; Tulsa, Okla.; Cincinnati; and Washington Dulles.

Other cuts, such as Tampa, Fort Myers, Punta Cana, Puerto Vallarta and Costa Rican destination Liberia, could be seasonal.   

Overall, American trimmed its scheduled flights from Austin by approximately one-third.

In a statement, American said that Austin remains an important market for the airline. 

“Together with our partners, American will continue to offer customers service to 15 of the top 20 markets from Austin while continuing to offer one-stop connections across our comprehensive global network,” the airline said. 

Since the pandemic, American has built Austin into a focus city, competing most heavily against market leader Southwest. The carrier’s 37 routes out of the Texas capital this month compares with just eight routes, all to hubs, in November 2019.  

Service from Austin to American’s hubs in Miami, Phoenix, Dallas/Fort Worth, Chicago O’Hare, Washington Reagan National, Charlotte, Los Angeles and JFK will continue after the cuts.
