In an effort to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, several U.S. cities and states have implemented travel restrictions and testing requirements for visitors, despite a lack of federal level regulations. For travelers headed to these areas, American Airlines will soon offer access to its at-home, preflight COVID-19 testing in partnership with LetsGetChecked.

“We’ve made great strides to help open international travel with our testing partners, and we recognize the need for similar domestic travel solutions,” said Alison Taylor, chief customer officer for American Airlines, in a press release. “As travel requirements continue to quickly evolve, we’re simplifying the research and COVID-19 testing fulfillment process for an overall more seamless travel experience.”

Starting Dec. 9, American Airlines customers traveling to any U.S. city, state, or territory with COVID-19 travel restrictions will have access to at-home testing through LetsGetChecked for travel occurring on or after Dec. 12.

Currently, there are 14 cities, states, and territories with COVID-19 travel restrictions, including the states of New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, and Alaska, plus the cities of Chicago and Washington, D.C. Puerto Rico has also implemented travel restrictions.

At-home COVID-19 testing with LetsGetChecked costs $129, and passengers are recommended to order the test five or more days prior to their flight. They can then schedule UPS pickup of their sample, keeping in mind that results usually have a 48-hour return window. Passengers should also take into account the individual requirements of their destination to ensure they’re not taking the test too far in advance. Once the sample is received, customers can view their results through a secure online portal.

For more information on how the program works, as well as other COVID-19 testing options available through American Airlines, visit the airline’s website. The airline’s COVID-19 information page also includes details about the individual travel restrictions and testing requirements for destinations around the globe.
