Author and former model Sandra Howard checks in to our travel Q and A

This week former model and author Sandra Howard checks into our travel Q&A.

She reveals the best foreign trip she went on when her husband Michael Howard was a cabinet minister, her most memorable modelling assignment, and more…

EARLIEST HOLIDAY MEMORY?

Travelling to Cape Town from Bulawayo as a child in the late 1940s. Halfway there the train broke down and I have a terrifying memory of baboons crawling all over the carriage.

MOST MEMORABLE MODELLING ASSIGNMENT?

Kenya to do a photoshoot for a women’s magazine in 1970. You would never spend that long on a modelling trip now. It would be far too expensive.

BEST FOREIGN TRIP WHEN YOUR HUSBAND MICHAEL WAS A CABINET MINISTER?

Sandra admits that she ‘fell in love’ with Bolivia when she first visited. Above is the Bolivian city of La Paz

Visiting Bolivia when he was Home Secretary because he wanted to stop the flow of drugs to Britain.

I fell in love with the country, saw the women in their bowler hats and sampled coca tea — it’s made from a different leaf from cocaine, but my beloved still wouldn’t drink it.

FAVOURITE DESTINATION?

Grenada is one of Sandra’s favourite destinations for its ‘lovely, hilly and green’ landscape. Above is the country’s Grand Etang National Park

Grenada because it’s so lovely, hilly and green and has beautiful beaches. The people are so friendly too.

HOLIDAY FROM HELL?

Mid-Wales when the children were young. It poured with rain and we sat on the beach in anoraks.

TRAVEL BEAUTY TIP?

Don’t wear much make-up because it will look tired by the end of a flight.
