Best destination for fish and chips lovers named – it’s not in Cornwall

Whether enjoyed as a Friday night treat or a beachfront snack, fish and chips are a staple of British cuisine.

Arguably one of the most popular dishes in the nation, cities across the country claim to be home to the best in the business.

But new research by the team at Betway has revealed which cities are the best destinations for fish and chip lovers.

Using a list of some of the UK’s most populated cities, as well as some of the country’s most popular staycation destinations, the research analysed criteria such as the number of fish and chip restaurants/takeaways in each town/city, Google reviews/rating of the highest rated takeaway in each town/city, and the number of menu options available at the highest rated takeaway in each town/city.

Bristol claims the crown as the best UK city for fish and chips lovers with an overall score of 60.6/80. Although not a coastal city, Bristol isn’t too far away from the sea, making it an ideal place to enjoy some of the freshest fish.

With 149 different eateries to choose from, hungry visitors will be spoilt for choice.

Nottingham follows as the second best city in the UK for fish and chips lovers with an overall score of 59.8/80.

Home to the largest portion of fish and chips in the UK – The Chip Inn’s Codfather, weighing an eye watering one stone 4lbs, it’s no surprise to see Nottingham make the list.

Up next is London, with the big smoke boasting a staggering 182 fish and chip eateries to choose from.

The English capital claimed a respectable overall score of 58.3.80 to cement its place as the third best city in the UK for fish and chip lovers.

Following London in fourth place is Scotland’s capital city, Edinburgh, with an overall score of 55.6/80.

Completing the top five is Leicester, claiming fifth position with an overall score of 55/80.

Gabriel’s in Birmingham was found to have the most extensive menu in the report with 113 options to choose from – with 46 being vegetarian friendly – while Fish Xpress in Nottingham had the second largest menu with 110 options in total – also with 46 vegetarian friendly dishes.

The report also looked at the highest rated chippy in each city, to reveal how their menus compare to each other.

It was also revealed that RYBKA (the fish likes to swim) in Brighton was the closest chippy to the seaside, just 0.2 miles away from the seaside with Francine’s in Newquay following at 0.39 miles away, and Chip Ahoy in Padstow 0.68 miles away from the sea.
