For many Britons the idea of ditching the UK’s dreary weather and spending their golden years under the sun sounds pretty tempting.
New research from the team at Moving To Spain has found the best destinations for expats looking to retire abroad.
The team looked at a range of factors to determine the winning country, including life expectancy and the quality of healthcare.
The research also looked at the cost of living, availability of retirement visas and crime levels.
This year’s winning country is a gorgeous southern European spot where the cost of living is lower than in the UK.

Portugal was crowned the best country for British expats looking to retire overseas. The pretty country has coastal and city destinations to choose from.
Many retired expats flock to the southern Algarve region with its atmospheric beaches and award winning golf courses.
However, expats will also find a cheaper way of life in cities such as Lisbon and Porto where many essentials cost far less than in the UK.
Portugal also has a long life expectancy with people living until 81 on average although that’s lower than in neighbouring Spain.
The average life expectancy in Spain is 83 and the country ranked second on the retirement list.
The Mediterranean country is one of the leading destinations for British expats, with many opting to settle on the coast.
