Meghan Markle and Prince Harry went on a trip to Tromso, in Norway, back in 2017, when the Duke of Sussex proposed to Meghan.
A flight attendant who was operating the flight revealed the Duke and Duchess of Sussex did not pay for the drinks and snacks they had themselves. Instead, it was paid for by their bodyguard.
“Harry and Meghan were lovely throughout the whole flight.
“They said to the airline that they wanted to be treated as normal passengers, so we didn’t do any exceptions or special service for them,” the flight attendant explained.
“At the beginning of the flight, they looked at the menu and I could see they were discussing what to order.
“When we went through with the service trolley, they stopped me and asked me for a drink and snack.”
She continued: “Harry had a breakfast tea and shortbread and Meghan had tea as well, but she chose a lemon muffin.
“They were very nice and friendly, but at the time to take the payment, I didn’t know what to do, as they didn’t ask for the bill and it seemed like they assumed that was for free.
“I was too embarrassed to ask so I just left,” the flight attendant explained.
“I panicked so I just kept going and decided not to ask for the payment, although they had requested to be treated like regular passengers before the flight.”
The flight from London to Tromso, in the Arctic Circle, was over three hours long, but the couple never ordered anything else.
The flight attendant admitted she was a bit worried as she didn’t know if she had done the right thing.
“By the end of the flight, though, their bodyguard, who was travelling with them, came to me and asked for the bill.
“I was so relieved but at the same time so confused!” she said.
“The bodyguard explained to me that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex never carry any money and he’s in charge of paying for everything.”
But why royals don’t carry any cash?
A former police protection officer for Princess Diana explained in 2009 that it is for security reasons.
“It is done for security reasons, to keep things as private as possible,” he said.
“[Police officers paying for royal expenses] would be the usual practice if a protection officer was in a situation where something had to be paid, be it rail tickets or food, he would pay for it and the money would be paid back to the officer, if he had used cash, or the police force if he used a police-issue credit card.
“It is very rare for members of the Royal Family to carry cash or credit cards so protection officers paying for things is quite a normal practice.
“When I worked with the late Princess Diana I did this on numerous occasions for things like meals at restaurants to hotel bookings.”
