Revealed: How Britons can swap miserable weather for a month-long sunshine holiday in Egypt for (almost) the same cost as living at home

  • For just £75 more, a couple can spend 28 nights in a seaside hotel in Egypt
  • The deal includes all-inclusive drinks and meals, return flights and transfers 

Britons fed up with typically miserable winter weather take note – they could spend a month basking in the Egyptian sun for almost the same cost as living at home.

An average two-person household in the UK pays around £1,553 for gas, energy, transport, food and drinks a month during wintertime in the UK, a study has found.

And one travel firm reported that for just £75 more, two adults can enjoy a 28-night stay at the three-star Amar Sina Egyptian Village on an all-inclusive basis, including flights.

The hotel, set along the coast near the city of Sharm El-Sheikh, promises ‘panoramic views’ of the Sinai mountain range and features a private beach, an outdoor pool, a spa and a diving centre.

Booked via Charitable Travel, the £1,628 trip includes return flights from Gatwick to Sharm El-Sheikh with easyJet, a baggage allowance of 23kg per person, return transfers, Atol protection and an £81 donation to a charity of your choice. 

Meanwhile, the UK bill breakdown, calculated by Experience Egypt using data from NimbleFins and the Office for National Statistics, comprises a food and beverage bill of £974, gas and energy for £209 and transport and petrol costs for £370.

This comes after the success of an easyJet deal launched in late 2022 that invited Britons to ‘escape the UK’ and leave the country for one month in the winter.

The sold-out 28-day package, priced at £650 per person, featured a stay in the five-star Stella Gardens Resort in Egypt, with all-inclusive meals and drinks, free spa and gym facilities and flights.

At the time, Lynn Beattie, an ACMA management accountant, told easyJet: ‘The data collected in this study is incredibly insightful showing just how much the average household in the UK will spend on the most basic of living expenses. 

‘While escaping abroad does not make all our financial commitments disappear, it’s startling to know that like for like, it’s cheaper to buy an all-inclusive holiday than stay in the UK this winter.’

Thanks to its low cost of living, Egypt has now become a popular long-stay winter destination, according to Experience Egypt .

It notes that the Egyptian government is promoting and facilitating month-long stays at a wide variety of hotels across the country.

There are direct flights to the resort city of Hurghada from London, Bristol, Manchester, Newcastle, and Birmingham, as well as flights to Sharm El-Sheikh from London, Bristol, Manchester, Birmingham, and Glasgow.

The price quoted by Charitable Travel for a 28-day stay is for a March 1 departure.
