The heatwave sweeping across Europe has some holiday destinations reaching temperatures as high as 52C. That’s far more than comfortably hot for most people.

But, one couple on holiday on the Spanish island of Fuerteventura have spoken to Daily Star about why it’s currently the perfect hotspot for them at around 30 to 34C. It’s especially important for the pair to stay safe in the sun as they’re at a naturist resort.

Gill and Keith, who have recently pledged themselves to one another, are staying at the BHH Naturist Resort in Costa Calma. The hotel is run by Karie Jane, a nudist herself, who transformed the holiday home into a clothes-off destination.

Gill and Keith say that Fuerteventura is far cooler than mainland Spain right now despite being wonderfully hot. The island is off the coast of North Africa and known for its white beaches and constant wind.

Gill told the Daily Star: "It’s nowhere near as hot as mainland Spain right now because of the constant breeze. There are even Windsurfing Championships here next week. The stiff breeze helps to keep the heat down so it’s not terribly unpleasant. You just have to be really careful."

As naturists, the duo enjoy taking their kit off while at the resort. But, when the wind is really high – despite its cooling nature – they do have to be careful on the beach.

Gill laughed: "We're not going down to the beach very much at the moment because of the wind – it’s a bit abrasive!"

While the sun in Fuerteventura is not blazing as much as in mainland Spain, Gill said you still need to take precautions with your skin. She noted: "Anoint everything with no less than factor 30 and don’t sit outside for hours frankly. If you get in the pool every 20 minutes or so it’s great!"

The island is perfect for nudists – especially if you can travel in the shoulder season right before the peak summer holidays. Gill commented: "We discovered that it’s the low season so it’s actually very quiet because people come here for winter sun. There are also fantastic breaches – they go for miles and there’s hardly anybody there. Anyone who is there doesn’t bat an eyelid!"

It was Keith who apparently got Gill into naturism. She explained: "It’s all his fault, we met five years ago and Keith was always interested. He’s alsways done it and I’m quite open-minded.

"It wasn’t an issue and it’s quite fun in its own way. It’s liberating and it’s lovely swimming in the pool with nothing on. Plus, not having to wear a bra all the time’s really nice!"

The BHH Naturist Resort in Costa Calma, where the couple are staying is a popular spot for naturists. Owner Karie says nudist zones remove judgement and creates an environment to feel liberated – some couples have visited BHH more than five times because they liked it so much.

Even the pool boys, cleaners and other staff can take off their kit and work in the nude. There are four apartments with an outdoor swimming pool, free private parking, a garden and a terrace.

The resort is equipped with a seating area, a flat-screen TV with satellite channels, a kitchen, a dining area, a safety deposit box and a private bathroom with a shower, free toiletries and a hairdryer.
