If you're planning a staycation in the UK this summer, then you may want to head to Cornwall.
That's because as well as yummy Cornish ice cream, the English county is also home to UK's biggest outdoor sea water pool – and it looks incredible!
Jubilee Pool is an amazing art-deco style attraction in Penzance.
Although it's been open since 1935 as a lido, the heated section only opened in 2020.
The triangular pool contains 5 million litres of seawater when full and has a capacity of 600 swimmers – making it the UK's biggest.
It's worth noting, the capacity is currently lower though because of social distancing.
The main pool is usually one or two degrees above sea temperature, but the geothermal section is heated to about 30-35 degrees via the pools very own geothermal well.
This also makes it the UK's first geothermal heated outdoor pool. It works by taking warm water from the 410m deep well – which is the same depth as one and a half Eiffel Towers.
The heat is taken out of that water using heat pumps, which then distribute it to the pool. It re-injects cooler back water into the ground.
As the pool is filled with sea water, you might wonder how it's cleaned.
There is no mechanical filter and the owners try not to use chemicals. Instead, they carefully maintain it by replacing the water daily, in time with the tide.
The water in the learner pool is replaced daily, with a small amount of chlorine added.
A full drain down then takes place every two weeks, when tides are higher, with deep cleans taking place every Monday.
Although you may expect it to be expensive to visit the UK's first geothermal pool, it's actually very reasonably priced.
Tickets for the heated section are £11.75 for adults, while the main pool is less than a fiver for any kind of ticket.
