As the holidays quickly approach, tourists will be looking to explore Europe’s famous Christmas markets.
Although some of Europe’s largest capitals may top the list, the Christmas market in Tallinn, Estonia has been branded one of the best on the continent and shouldn’t be overlooked.
In 2019, it was named the best Christmas Market in Europe and is still one of the top spots to spend a weekend exploring to get into the Christmas spirit.
Wooden stalls radiate out from a huge Christmas tree selling various handicrafts including woollen jumpers and mittens as well as handmade ornaments.
Children can see Santa while parents sample the local mulled wine known as glögi. Snow is common in Tallinn creating a winter wonderland atmosphere in the city’s unique old town.

Food stalls serve sausages, potatoes and sauerkraut while famous Christmas desserts such as gingerbread cookies are sure to be on offer as will local black pudding with pickled pumpkin.
The famous Town Hall Square market also sees weekend performances with Santa doubling as a multilingual MC.
Lush accommodation can be found in Tallinn’s Old Town just a stone’s throw away from the Christmas Market – the five-star Hotel Telegraaf is a favourite in the city centre.
Just outside of the Old Town, elegant yet affordable accommodation means travellers will never be far from one of Europe’s best Christmas markets.

Tourists may also like to visit Tallinn’s Gingerbread Mania, an art exhibition featuring around 100 artists where everything is made out of gingerbread.
Tallinn’s Christmas market opens on December 1 and goes through the New Year until January 7.
Direct flights from London, Paris, Brussels and other European capitals mean Tallinn is just a short journey from anywhere on the continent.
While Tallinn’s Christmas market may not be as well known as other festivals across Europe, it is certainly considered one of the continent’s best.
