Low-budget airline praised for policy to give full row to ‘passengers of size’

A low-budget airline was commended on social media earlier this week over its policy regarding seats for “passengers of size”.

Southwest Airlines went viral on TikTok after it was discovered that reportedly gave complimentary seats to accommodate a passenger.

According to Southwest Airlines’ inclusion policy, customers whose “encroach” past the armrest are entitled to an extra seat.

Southwest appears to be one of the few, if not the only, airlines that offer free additional seats to larger passengers.

As outlined in the policy provided to Fox Business, passengers falling into this category “have the option of purchasing just one seat and then discussing your seating needs with the Customer Service Agent at the departure gate.”

The airline adds “If it’s determined that a second (or third) seat is needed, you’ll be accommodated with a complimentary additional seat.”

The flight attendants will look into making seating arrangements, which may involve relocating other passengers to accommodate the “unplanned accommodation.”

Customers can also buy extra seats ahead of their flight and then get in touch with Southwest “for a refund of the cost of additional seating after travel.”

The policy explains: “Customers who encroach upon any part of the neighboring seat(s) may proactively purchase the needed number of seats prior to travel to ensure the additional seat(s) is available…

“The purchase of additional seats serves as a notification of a special seating need and allows us to adequately plan for the number of occupied seats onboard.”

According to Fox Business, the policy adds: “It also helps us ensure we can accommodate all Customers on the flight for which they purchased a ticket and avoid asking Customers to relinquish their seats for unplanned accommodation.

“Most importantly, it ensures that all Customers onboard have access to safe and comfortable seating. You may contact us for a refund of the cost of additional seating after travel.”

A self-described Fat Solo Traveler, Kimmy (@kimmystyled), shared a video on TikTok that has garnered nearly 1,000,000 views since October, showing how she requested her complimentary seat.

Approaching the airline booth, she said: “Hello, I’m hoping to use your customer of size policy today.”

In response, the Southwest employee provided Kimmy with an additional ticket at no cost for her extra seat, a move that shed light on the airline’s customer of size policy.
