A small private island in the West Indies, Mustique is just three miles long and one mile wide. The exclusive destination has long been a favourite of the Royal Family.

Queen Elizabeth II’s sister, Princess Margaret used to travel to the stunning island twice a year.

The Princess visited Mustique in February and in October or November, and it was said to be one of her favourite places.

She stayed at her private villa, Les Jolies Eaux, which was especially designed for her by Oliver Messel.

The five bedroom property has been featured in Architectural Digest and now costs around $30,000 (£26,000) to rent for a week.

Basil Charles, former owner of Basil’s Bar on the island, told Town and Country that Princess Margaret was “amazing”.

He said: “She was friendly, fun. She liked partying, late nights, and to dance.”

After Princess Magaret’s death in 1996, Les Jolies Eaux was gifted to her son David Linley, who sold the property in 2001.

However, Mustique still holds a special place in the hearts of the Royal Family and the Prince and Princess of Wales are regular visitors.

Kate Middleton and Prince William are said to love holidays in Mustique and even celebrated Prince George’s sixth birthday there.

The island’s privacy means that the young family are able to relax and enjoy themselves away from prying eyes.

Mustique has an enforced no-fly zone above it and every visitor is registered with the security team when they arrive.

The island’s security team are said to know exactly who is on the island at any one time to protect its exclusive guests.

Known for natural beauty, gorgeous beaches, dramatic hills and crystal clear turquoise waters, Mustique is one of the world’s most stunning islands.

Macaroni Beach is one of Mustique’s top rated attractions on Tripadvisor, despite very few people ever having seen it.

A visitor wrote: “One of the nicest beaches I’ve been to in the world. Typically not crowded since the island only has a couple hundred people on it at a time.”

The luxurious island is completely unspoilt and has no traffic lifts, visible power cables or high-rise hotels.

Aside from its royal visitors, the island attracts a range of celebrities who enjoy its privacy and beauty.

Paul McCartney, John Travolta, Sir Mick Jagger and Jude Law have all holidayed in Mustique.

Visitors to Mustique can take part in watersports such as scuba diving and sailing or even explore on horseback.

The island is also renowned for its legendary house parties with guests getting together for exclusive dinners and beach barbeques.
