The healthiest city in the world is ‘absolutely beautiful’

Travel company, holidu, looked at the cities with the lowest pollution, highest happiness levels and other important factors to find the world’s healthiest cities. Two gorgeous cities tied for first place and each could make an excellent home for a British expat.

Healthiest cities in the world

  1. Stockholm,Sweden/ Faro, Portugal
  2. Helsinki, Finland
  3. Madrid, Spain
  4. Reykjavik, Iceland
  5. Tel Aviv, Israel
  6. Las Vegas, USA
  7. Lisbon, Portugal
  8. Malaga, Spain
  9. Seville, Spain

Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, and Faro, the capital of Portugal’s Algarve tied for first place as the healthiest city for expats.

But why is Stockholm such a healthy place to live? The Swedish diet is reasonably healthy and people have access to lots of fresh fish and produce. However, sweets are taken very seriously in Sweden and the capital is packed with pick and mix shops.

Stockholm has plenty of green space and very low air pollution making it easy for residents to get out and exercise.

Kungliga Djurgården is an island in the centre of the city and one of its biggest parks. The huge open space is also packed with museums.

Tourists will find the Abba Museum and Skansen, an open air museum with its own animals, on the island.

During summer, expats will find Stockholm’s light and bright with the sun rising as early as 3:30am.

However, new residents may struggle during winter when the city has much shorter daylight hours than in the UK.

Meanwhile, Faro in Portugal has some of Europe’s warmest weather and is one of the best-value cities in Western Europe.

Expats living in the Algarve will have access to some of Europe’s best beaches all year round.

The area is also a golf hotspot and boasts some of the world’s best courses. The Portuguese diet incorporates a lot of fresh food.

It’s rich in healthy fats such as olive oil and people have access to a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Helsinki took third place on the list and could be the perfect destination for Britons looking for a new start.

Finland was ranked the world’s happiest country for the sixth year in a row in this year’s rankings.

Madrid was Spain’s highest ranked city while Reykjavik grabbed the fourth place on the rankings.

Tel Aviv was the highest ranked city outside of Europe with Las Vegas, the highest rated destination in the USA.
