Which Colorado ski areas are still open in May: A list of the last spring skiing options

With the arrival of May, only four Colorado ski areas remain open, and by the end of the month it’s likely that only one will remain in operation.

Vail closed on Sunday. Loveland will close next Sunday. Winter Park is expected to close mid-month, and Breckenridge is expected to close Memorial Day. That would leave Arapahoe Basin, which typically closes in early June.

Arapahoe Basin is still going strong with all nine lifts in operation.

“I think we have the best snow coverage of the season,” Arapahoe Basin chief operating officer Al Henceroth wrote on his blog last week. “Definitely certain areas like the East Wall, including the hiking (terrain), have the best coverage of the season. Snow seems to clinging to almost everything.”

Loveland, which is reporting seven of 10 lifts in operation, can expect 10 inches of new snow over the next five days to freshen up its slopes for the final week of its season, according to OpenSnow weather reporting. Winter Park also can expect 10 inches over the next five days and 14 more the following five days. Winter Park has four lifts in operation, all of them on the Mary Jane side.

Arapahoe Basin is expecting seven inches over the next five days and 12 more next week. Breckenridge, which has 44% of its terrain open, is expecting five inches this week and 11 next week.
