What better way to embrace the winter season than to sleep in an igloo? Luckily, Greenland’s Igloo Lodge is reopening this month.
Located in Ilulissat, the Igloo Lodge offers visitors the chance to sleep in one of its six hand-built houses made from ice. Each one sleeps up to two people, making this snowy getaway ideal for couples, though families and friends can also book several igloos for a group stay.
If the idea of spending the night in a house made of ice is enough to make you shiver, worry not. These igloos come with reindeer skins, specialty warm winter sleeping bags, and a petroleum lamp to help guests stay warm, Lonely Planet reports. Outdoor temperatures may drop below freezing, but inside, the temperature hovers just around 32 degrees Fahrenheit (or zero degrees Celsius). Guests can also escape the cold by retreating to the cozy wood cabin, where they’ll find bathroom facilities and a communal area in which meals are served.
Off the Map Travel, a company specializing in trips to the Arctic, creates custom itineraries for its clients, often booking a stay at the Igloo Lodge, along with other wintry experiences like snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and northern lights safaris.
“The best Arctic adventures are all about experiencing authentic moments and creating lifelong memories, and this is one that delivers on both,” Off the Map Travel founder Jonny Cooper told Lonely Planet. “As soon as you enter the igloo, you can see the craftsmanship that goes into its creation, a skill that’s been passed down through the generations. And then to lie back and sleep there, just as Innuits have done for thousands of years before, is a really special moment.”
