Whether tourists want to avoid an irritating tan line or just prefer to sunbathe in the nude, it can be a struggle to find a suitable nudist beach.

A new ranking from the swimwear team at Pour Moi, has ranked the world’s best nudist beaches.

The team analysed reviews for nude beaches all over the world to find this year’s top spot to be naked by the sea.

Although it didn’t take the top spot, Spain was ranked the best country for nudist sunbathing, with four beaches included in the top 20.

This year’s best rated beach was a “fantastic” piece of coastline on the popular Floridian coast in the USA.

World’s best nudist beaches

  1. Haulover Beach Park, Florida
  2. Praia de Tambaba, Brazil
  3. Red Beach, Greece
  4. Patara Beach, Turkey
  5. Playa de los Muertos, Spain
  6. Playa Zipolite, Mexico
  7. Es Trenc, Spain
  8. Praia de Abricó, Brazil
  9. Banana Beach, Greece
  10. Paradise Beach, Greece

Florida’s Haulover Beach Park grabbed the top spot with the team celebrating its “calming blue waters” and “white sand”.

A tourist from the UK ‘astonvillan’ wrote on Tripadvisor: “Fantastic naturist beach” and said it “retains a natural setting”.

Another tourist ‘Jonathon S’ wrote: “Miles and miles of clean sandy beach. Great clothes optional watched over by lifeguards and patrolled by park staff to dissuade pervs, voyeurs and over enthusiastic photographers.”

The beach is the largest nudist beach in the USA and attracts over a million visitors to its shores each year.

Europe’s best nudist beach was Red Beach on the stunning island of Santorini in Greece. The team said the beach’s lava rocks offered some much needed privacy. There are some safety warnings about the beach due to rockfall so tourists should check the latest advice before going.

Although none of the UK’s naturist beaches made the hotlist, there are a few spots for staycationing nudists.

Tourists could check out the naturist beach at Studland Bay in Dorset or Brighton’s Naturist Beach.

A tourist in Bali, Indonesia has described the “disgust” that she felt after her recent trip to the popular holiday destination.

Sara Walsh, 25, said she was shocked by the amount of trash floating in the ocean, where many tourists spend their days swimming and doing water sports.

Following the nightmare trip, she said: “I was disgusted.

“It felt gross jumping into the water. I stayed in for maybe 30 seconds.”

The Massachusetts woman owns a sustainable swimwear company, named Siren Swim Co, and was visiting the Indonesian island for a business trip to the factory that makes her line of swimsuits.

Bali is a vacation destination island known for its surfing, volcanoes and home to thousands of Hindu temples.

Walsh was visiting the island with her younger brother in April and the pair were on a boat snorkelling when she made the “disgusting” discovery.

She said: “This was our first stop on the snorkeling trip. They took us to an area where you could see manta rays.

“The ocean surface was very obviously covered in trash and plastic. But the tour guides seemed to see no issue with this and automatically started getting people in the water.”

It wasn’t just Walsh who was perturbed by the grim find as she said, other vacationers jumped in the water and “quickly got back on the boat because of how disgusting the water was.”

Walsh said she had started her swimwear brand “with the mission to help clean up the oceans, all our suits are made from recycled plastic.”

She added: “I chose a factory in Bali because I had heard how bad their ocean pollution was, but to truly see it with my own eyes, it was appalling.

“I took the video in hopes that it could raise awareness and convince more people to make an effort to clean up our oceans.”

Walsh described that other snorkeling hotspots where guides took the group were not as trashed, but highlighted that “it is truly terrible that we are the cause of all this trash being in our oceans.”

“I mostly feel for the animals in the ocean that are being subjected to all our trash,” she added.

“Wow”. If The Artist’s House by the Sea in Herne Bay had to be summarised in just one word, that would be it. Nestled on the clifftops of the Kent coast overlooking the North Sea, the cottage is a unique hideaway, part art gallery part seaside escape, with the most incredible views. It was these views of the sea that first stole artist Rachael Dickens’ heart, and led to her purchase and subsequent renovation of the property. The design of the cottage is focussed entirely around the vistas, with vast windows flooding the property with light, almost to the point that you feel outdoors, even when you are snug inside.

We travelled to Herne Bay in November, not typically a time you might consider a seaside holiday, but a quiet escape with nothing but miles of rolling waves was exactly what we needed. The property, which can be rented from Sykes Holiday Cottages, is striking from the front, constructed from jet-black weatherboard and a corrugated roof, a substantial contrast from the cottages around it.

Though the property itself is modern, it draws likenesses with a traditional fisherman’s hut, and wouldn’t look out of place on the beaches of Dungeness. And the artist has brought elements of the shoreline to her door, with a looming driftwood totem acting as the focal point of the front garden, surrounded by greenery, rocks and flora.

Inside, the house is bright and airy. The open plan kitchen, dining and living space is painted white, while floors are made from pale plywood, allowing the natural light to flood in from the floor-to-ceiling windows set on either side.

Though the space is calming, it’s hard to know where to settle your gaze first. The walls and G-plan units are filled with paintings and artworks, all of which are for sale, while a restored vintage pinball machine brightens up the corner of the room. The heart of the lounge area is a wood burner, the perfect addition for visit to the sea in late autumn. Kitschy mid-century furniture pieces, including a show-stopping cocktail-themed side table, add personality to the space.

A large dining table doubles up as the perfect place to enjoy a family meal or put together a 1,000-piece puzzle. The cottage comes with plenty of board games to keep you occupied, as well as an array of books. To the back of the room is the kitchen, ideal for communal cooking throughout the year. The bi-fold doors to the rear of the house open up into the large garden, which I imagine makes summertime entertaining a dream. Even from the back garden, the placement of windows means you can look all the way through the property and out to sea.

The kitchen, of course, has its quirks. A vintage game and metallic, mounted plate rack add character above the kitchen sink and worktop area, while a kitchen island makes the home for the gas hob. There is also an electric double oven, microwave, and dishwasher.

Although the property is mostly open plan, a snug just off the lounge area provides the perfect place to curl up with a book and take in the views. The cosy space is adorned with trinkets and artworks, including a suspended cabinet filled with shell art and curios from global travels. A puss in boots embroidery, stitched onto lace detailed fabric, was perhaps my favourite item in this den of knick-knacks.

The lower ground floor also hosts the main bathroom, a beautiful space which brings elements of the outdoors inside. A floor-to-ceiling glass window allows natural light to flood the space, and a door opens up into the garden if you want to feel as though you’re bathing in nature. Inspired by the house of César Manrique on Lanzarote, the bathroom is mostly made from old potato crates, which make up the cladding surrounding the bath and toilet.

The bathtub was the highlight of the space for me, tucked away beneath a repurposed door which, when open, is decorated with music notation from famous love songs and show tunes. Although our visit collided with the onset of the cold weather, I found solace in a warm bath with the garden door open to the sound of falling rain.

The Artist’s House features two bedrooms, a double downstairs and a loft bedroom upstairs where guests can wake up to morning vistas of the sun rising above the horizon. On warmer days, bi-fold doors lead to a small balcony, perfect for enjoying the sea breeze with your morning coffee in hand. To the rear of the upstairs is a dressing room nook, as well as a jewel-toned, green-tiled shower room reminiscent of Art Deco Paris.

A large dining table doubles up as the perfect place to enjoy a family meal or put together a 1,000-piece puzzle. The cottage comes with plenty of board games to keep you occupied, as well as an array of books. To the back of the room is the kitchen, ideal for communal cooking throughout the year. The town of Herne Bay is just a six-minute drive or roughly a 38-minute walk and the rocky shoreline of the beach is, quite literally, a stone’s throw away. There you can hunt for ammonites, brave a dip in the North Sea or walk 30 minutes along the lip of the surf to find the site of the ancient Roman fort of Reculver. There is also a shop 0.5 miles away and a local pub just a few minutes further.

Our seaside stay may not have been the typical summer escape, interspersed by autumnal clouds and rain. But cosied up inside The Artist’s House, from dusk until dawn, we found ourselves on the beach, watching the waves roll in and out.

The Artist’s House by the Sea can be booked via Sykes Holiday Cottages. Seven nights’ stay start from £703.

Rental insurance experts, Duuo, looked at Instagram hashtags to find the UK’s most Instagrammable beaches. The list features some of the UK’s most beautiful beaches.

UK’s most beautiful beaches

  1. Durdle Door, Dorset
  2. Watergate Bay, Cornwall
  3. Camber Sands, Sussex
  4. Kynance Cove, Cornwall
  5. Formby Beach, Merseyside
  6. Chesil Beach, Dorset
  7. Saunton Sands, Devon
  8. Holkham Beach, Norfolk
  9. West Wittering Beach, Sussex
  10. Rhossili Bay, Gower#

Durdle Door was ranked the UK’s most beautiful beach and had over 270,000 Instagram hashtags.

The stunning beach is located on the Jurassic coast in Dorset and is just a short walk from equally gorgeous Lulworth Cove.

Durdle Door is world-famous for its 10,000 year old limestone arch which is the perfect selfie spot.

Tourists should always stick to footpaths at Durdle Door and should never jump from the arch as it is very dangerous.

One visitor wrote on Tripadvisor: “If you are in Dorset, this is a must see/do.”

Watergate Bay in Cornwall was the UK’s second most beautiful beach and is about three miles from Newquay.

The beach offers two miles of golden sand and is very popular with surfers as it picks up swell from the Atlantic.

Tourists can walk to the beach from Newquay but the trip is described as “strenuous” for beginners.

Camber Sands rounded off the top three and is a very popular seaside destination in Sussex.

The unique spot is the only sand dune system in East Sussex where the majority of beaches are stoney.

Camber Sands has fantastic views and is largely unspoilt making it the perfect spot for a family beach day out.

Kynance Cove in Cornwall was the second Cornish beach to make the top 10 most beautiful rankings.

The stunning tidal beach has white sand, turquoise sea and rock stacks for tourists to enjoy and is located on the Lizard peninsula.

Formby Beach in Merseyside was the fifth most beautiful spot and has some of Europe’s best sand dune habitats.

Many rare species can be spotted on the beach including natterjack toads and greater spotted woodpeckers.

The beach is managed by the National Trust and BBQs and fires are not allowed at any point.

Airbnb used its data to find the UK’s top trending seaside destinations this year. The research shows that many Britons are choosing a beach staycation over a holiday abroad in 2022.

Airbnb’s top trending seaside destinations

  1. Hornsea, East Riding of Yorkshire
  2. Walton-on-the-Naze, Essex
  3. Fleetwood, Lancashire
  4. Ingoldmells, Lincolnshire
  5. Sandown, Isle of Wight
  6. Formby, Merseyside
  7. Redcar, North Yorkshire,
  8. Whitley Bay, Tyne and Wear
  9. Bognor Regis, West Sussex
  10. Scarborough, North Yorkshire
  11. Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, Northumberland
  12. Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex

The UK’s top trending seaside destination was Hornsea in the East Riding of Yorkshire.

Hornsea has plenty to offer British holidaymakers with a quaint promenade and historic Victorian folly.

One visitor to Hornsea Bridge wrote on Tripadvisor: “Such a beautiful beach, mainly sand but with some pebbles to make sandcastles or admire the different colours. Tranquil setting in the evening.”

Holidaymakers could also pay a visit to the Hornsea Museum or the Bugtopia Hornsea Zoo.

Walton-on-the-Naze in Essex took the second spot while Fleetwood in Lancashire was the third most popular spot.

Formby in Merseyside also made the list and is considered one of the UK’s hidden seaside gems.

Anyone who fancies a trip to the Isle of Wight could consider a holiday in Sandown, number five on the list.

North Yorkshire could be the perfect staycation spot with two stunning seaside spots making the top 10.

Scarborough was the 10th most popular spot and is home to some of the UK’s best fish and chips.

Councillor Jim Grieve from Scarborough Borough Council, said: “We’re delighted to be named one of the top trending seaside destinations in the UK by Airbnb this year.

“Scarborough is the original coastal holiday destination and since the Victorians realised just how fantastic our town is, we’ve welcomed millions of people.

“Whether someone comes to Scarborough to watch the world go by from the beach or sample award-winning food and drink, there is so much to do in our town.

“With amazing countryside, seaside villages and the North York Moors on our doorstep, Scarborough is also a great base from which to explore the whole of the Yorkshire coast.”

Amanda Cupples, General Manager for Northern Europe at Airbnb, said: “We’re continuing to see the resurgence of the Great British seaside holiday with Brits seeking coastal resorts, and in particular, lesser-known destinations in all corners of the country.

“Beyond providing British holidaymakers the opportunity to discover up-and-coming destinations across the UK this summer, Hosts on Airbnb are creating valuable income streams for themselves and their communities.

“Now is a great time for anyone curious about Hosting to offer a home away from home and take advantage of the bustling summer months to make some extra income.”

The sign was displayed en-route to Polkerris Beach, in Cornwall, as the car park had reached full capacity by early Sunday afternoon. One local woman tweeted saying that “most” people were ignoring the clearly visible sign, which warned visitors to park in the overflow car park. Otherwise, they risked getting stuck trying to turn around if they tried to drive down to the beach itself.

She said: “Most ignored sign of the day. The car park is definitely full and they’re still driving down.”

According to Cornwall Live, one person called it standard practice in the area, while another said: “It takes some skill to read and believe a sign whilst driving. Not all have that skill.”

Another said: “You can’t fix stupid! I’d love to be on the beach at Porthcurno today but just the thought of parking put me off so sticking with the garden.”

Porthcurno and Polkerris are just two of many beauty spots that have single-track roads and difficult access – causing problems on particularly sunny days where beaches are in high demand. In fact, parking at Porthcurno, in West Cornwall, is often referred to as predatory with people moving cones to park and blocking emergency services from accessing the beach in the process.

One review for Polkerris on TripAdvisor said: “Really bad for parking if your disabled don’t bother steep single track road where the motorist’s don’t have a clue how to drive on carpark is 600 meters away from beach and rammed.”

Another review said: “We went to Polkerris Beach in mid-summer when it was very busy. There is a smal car park nearby which is diffuclt to drive round as it is full of large potholes. In the summer, if you don’t get there early it will be full. You can drop off near to the beach but you might then get stuck in grid-locked traffic.

“There was an alternative car park in a field about 1/4 mile away – there was an honesty box where you pay on exit. From there there is a walk down a uneven and quite steep path to the beach – OK for young people with good shoes who don’t have much to carry.”

Despite this, many reviews praised the beautiful scenery found at the location, as well as the services available, including pubs, cafes, and water-sport equipment rentals.

South Beach is where the party really gets going in Miami, USA – and Britons looking for a fabulously located hotel that brings the fun should check in to Moxy South Beach. Opened last year, the hotel has come into its own this year as travellers around the world get moving again and are looking for a good time – and good times are what this hotel is all about.

Rooms

Moxy hotels are famed for their bunk bed rooms – perfect for groups of friends looking to cut costs (and gossip late into the night together). The sitting room version of these rooms are cleverly designed to maximise space, and even manage to fit in a sofa area for lounging in before heading out for the night.

There are also Double Queen rooms, which as is standard in the States, feature double beds. I stayed in a King Room with Ocean Views – being willing to share a (massive) bed with my friend meant gaining storage space on the twin room, which we preferred. The hotel does have suites, but as it is marketed at a younger crowd, there are only two – so book early if you want one! These are extremely spacious, which is a true luxury in South Beach where most hotels sit in older buildings and do run small.

Whichever room type you opt for, it will be playfully designed and fun. Each room has floor to ceiling windows to make the most of the gorgeous Miami sunlight (and ocean views, if you opt for that) and features local custom art work to really give you the Miami flavour.

The bathroom was an oasis after a day spent sightseeing or lounging by the pool, with a walk-in rain shower that I could have stood under forever. To make the most of space, guests can requests extra amenities if they want them from the front desk, rather than have things they don’t need cluttering up the cupboards and sides – a thoughtful touch that also leans into the sustainability that is such a priority for so many travellers now.

And as a final twist to make you feel really at home, dogs (under 20llbs) are welcome – woof!

Restaurants

The food at Moxy South Beach is worth checking out whether you are staying here or not.

Breakfast at most hotels is a bit of an afterthought, or a cliché – not so here. Los Buenos Tacos serves freshly made juices, hand rolled tacos & Cuban style coffee all day. Designed to look like a classic Bodega, this spot had ample choice and big portions – just what I needed to refuel after a night of partying. The fact it is open until 2pm was an added bonus for this night owl.

Across the lobby is Bar Moxy, which greets guests as they arrive. It’s the perfect people-watching spot as you enjoy a cocktail before starting the night – and not just of those passing through, as the oculus in the ceiling allows you to see swimmers in the pool above as they float by too.

America is famed for introducing the world to brunch, and Serena restaurant’s offering doesn’t disappoint. Set in the open-air overlooking South Beach, the Mexican style restaurant is open for lunch and dinner, but really comes into its own for weekend brunch. It was packed with groups there to celebrate, but the excellent staff never looked too busy, and we felt extremely well looked after. I enjoyed a decadent lobster benedict, while my friend tucked into a divine tres leches french toast, all washed down with bubbles.

Our best meal by far though was at seafood hotspot Como Como. I cannot heap enough praise on this restaurant – the food was outstanding, the cocktails were fantastic (try the Jamaicoso if you like rum, which I definitely do), and the staff were knowledgeable and super friendly. It was the perfect place for my friend to try oysters for the first time ever (she gave them a thumbs up) before we dived into jumbo shrimp and grilled branzino. As with the rest of Miami, the buzz really starts later at night, so book for 9pm to get the best atmosphere.

Amenities

Make sure to make time for a day by the pool – cabanas can be booked for $100 a day, or beds & towels are free for hotel guests. There are staff walking around ready to bring you snacks and drinks to get into the pool party spirit, and on the weekends in particular the area has a fun party vibe all day. Bright inflatables fill the water – perfect for that much needed Instagram pic – and music fills the air.

If the beach is more your scene, there are beds for hotel guests a short walk away on South Beach – but be warned, an umbrella will cost extra ($22). South Beach is busy, busy, busy, with groups playing music and posing for TikTok videos everywhere – but if you can ignore that (or join in!), the water is warm and not to be missed.

For those that want to escape the party, head to The Upside on the rooftop of the hotel. There is a small pool and a more chilled out atmosphere, with films screened in the outdoor movie area and large daybeds to lounge on.

One perk to definitely take advantage of is the free bikes (helmets and locks can also be borrowed for free). We took a ride down to the beach front for a long cruise on the eight mile trail, with gorgeous views of the water on one side and myriad hotels and historic buildings on the other.

Unfortunately there are no guarantees when it comes to the British weather. However, there are a few beaches where Britons are least likely to experience a rainy day.

New research from Parkdean Resorts analysed the rainfall patterns at Britain’s most Googled beaches over one year.

Britain’s beaches with least rainfall

  1. Botany Bay, Kent
  2. Severn Beach, Bristol
  3. Eastbourne Beach, Eastbourne
  4. Kimmeridge Bay, Dorset
  5. Lulworth Cove, Weymouth
  6. Camber Sands, Rye
  7. Filey Bay, Filey
  8. Cayton Bay, Scarborough
  9. Whitesands Bay, Dunbar
  10. Saltburn Beach, Redcar

Botany Bay in Kent is the UK’s sunniest beach and has only 58 rainy days per year, according to Parkdean.

Just 18 of those fall between May and September making the beach the perfect spot to enjoy the summer.

The beach offers stunning cliff views and plenty of rock pools for children to explore.

One visitor wrote on Tripadvisor: “A lovely beach encased by high chalk cliffs, clean, with golden sands.”

Severn Beach in Bristol was the second sunniest spot with just 62 rainy days in an average year.

The South Gloucestershire beach has a paved promenade with a small shingle beach offering plenty of trails.

Visitors could walk part of the Severn Way which is a whopping 210 miles long and takes in the beach.

One visitor said: “Went for a nice stroll along this beach with good views of the bridge in the distance.”

Eastbourne Beach rounded off the top three sunniest beaches with just 19 days of rain in an average summer.

The resort town of Eastbourne has a 19th century pier and a pretty beach suitable for families.

Kimmeridge Bay in Dorset is also one of the UK’s sunniest spots with just 64 rainy days per year.

The stunning beach is located within a marine Special area of Conservation and offers excellent rockpooling opportunities.

The UK’s rainiest beach is Luskentyre Beach in Stornoway which has an average of 43 rainy days during summer alone.

However, the stunning beach on the Isle of Harris looks almost Caribbean with clear blue waters.

One tourist wrote on Tripadvisor: “Forget the Caribbean and Indian Ocean, this is the most beautiful wild ocean beach on earth.

“White sand and turquoise sea make this the most special of places you must visit.”

Scotland might have chilly water but the beaches are definitely worth a trip this summer.
