Nearly all large cruise ships have a buffet restaurant. It’s usually one of the ship’s most popular restaurants as it’s included in the price of the cruise.
However, the experience isn’t always relaxing for passengers. A cruise guest took to Reddit to complain about rude cruise passengers wasting a lot of food.
Reddit user ‘Beaconkitty’ wrote that one of their biggest bugbears is “people who get huge plates of food and then don’t eat it.”
Another person wrote: “This one absolutely gets me. I watched an entire family of eight each grab a massive buffet plate, load each of their plates absolutely heaping full of food and then eat roughly less than half of it and leave it to be cleaned up by the staff. The buffet is endless food, why can’t you take smaller portions but go up again?”
Buffet food is usually unlimited and passengers can go up as many times as they want. Many ships encourage passengers to take small portions not to waste food.

Another guest said: “People who take 30 chicken wings or 20 pieces of fried fish back to their own table to create their own private buffet for their group and then not eat half of it because it’s gone cold.”
Some big cruise groups like to take large plates to their table so they can enjoy their meal family style. However, this isn’t allowed at every cruise buffet.
This is because it could lead to more food wastage or mean there isn’t enough food left on the buffet for other passengers.

But food wastage isn’t the only faux pas passengers might make at the buffet. Another cruise guest complained about people using dirty plates.
They said: “Taking their dirty plates back up to the buffet. If that isn’t enough, banging the serving spoon on the dirty plate.”
While passengers might think they’re helping out the staff by reusing a dirty plate, this isn’t encouraged as it could be unhygienic.
Cruise expert and founder of Panache Cruises, James Cole, said: “Don’t worry about dishes at the buffet and get a new plate, glass or mug every time you wish to top up your food or drinks.
“You may think you’re doing them a favour by reducing the number of dirty dishes but it’s actually frowned upon due to sanitary purposes.”
Bugs can spread rapidly among passengers on cruise ships so crew usually have a number of rules in place to avoid illnesses passing between guests.
