New smaller ships pack a lot of luxe into a little space

This year and next, many small and expedition ships are making their debuts in the luxury segment.

Stephen Scott, a travel advisor with Protravel International, Global Travel Collection, weighed in on which of those vessels he is most looking forward to and what sets them apart:

The Crystal Endeavor has plenty of bells and whistles to explore, from Zodiacs, kayaks, a submersible and the capability to support helicopters. In remote locations, a Zodiac ride will not be enough for the luxury traveler anymore: We are all becoming tech-savvy, thanks to 2020 rapidly driving us all online, and our expectations have been raised. The Crystal Endeavor will deliver.

The Silver Moon will introduce a culinary program, S.A.L.T. (Sea and Land Taste), curated with Adam Sachs, former editor-in-chief of Saveur magazine. This unique program, focusing on sourcing ingredients from the destinations that guests visit through market trips and preparing special dinners, will be sure to delight culinary enthusiasts looking for something truly special.

Our guests are very excited about the Atlas Ocean Voyages ships. They are straying a little bit away from the country club-type of luxury and focusing more on the luxe experience.

You can see it in the design of the ship and the staterooms. There is no need to reduce your standards to sail to polar regions, thanks to their newbuilds. Atlas is introducing five polar-class ships, which means it will be easier to find a great ship for your destination and reduce the hit-or-miss you may have with other brands.

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises’ three upcoming expedition ships — the Hanseatic Nature, Hanseatic Inspiration and Hanseatic Spirit — blend nature with the brand’s six-star luxury experience. Daily presentations in the HanseAtrium, a new multifunctional lounge with state-of-the-art technology, means immersion will not only be via binoculars, microscopes and expert word-of-mouth presentations but with an expansion of the technology that includes touch screens, customized apps and 3D modeling.
