The Hawaii Theatre Center in downtown Honolulu reopened Nov. 5 after a 20-month closure due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The theater’s lineup includes new shows as well as a few rescheduled after being canceled in 2020 and early 2021. Under current regulations, all show attendees must show proof of full vaccination against Covid-19.

“We couldn’t have made it through such a prolonged shutdown without the generous support of our donors, board and talented staff and volunteers,” Gregory Dunn, president and CEO of the Hawaii Theatre Center, said in a statement.

The reopening comes just in time for the Hawaii Theatre to celebrate its 100-year anniversary of its opening in 1922. The theater was restored and reopened in 1996 after a 12-year closure. A variety of events and special presentations are scheduled in 2022 to mark the centennial.

Upcoming shows at the Hawaii Theatre Center
include the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra performing Handel’s “Messiah” on
Dec. 11 and 12, Hawaiian musical group the Makaha Sons on Dec. 17
and 18 and comedian Tom Segura for two shows on Dec. 31.

The theater plans to continue broadcasting performances on the internet after seeing success with the initiative during the pandemic.

“We’ve found that many of our nonprofit partners are able to reach a global audience with their message and are looking forward to our continuing to offer digital broadcast of their content in the future,” said Avery Fukeda, director of development and special events of the theater.
