Tignes was once the underdog, too far out of town to be considered luxurious. Now it is leaping ahead with its new wave of excitement. Perfect for the cool kids in town wanting the new experience to deliver home to colleagues or for families, wanting luxurious surroundings, great service and the peace and quiet of the mountain. The ski resort of Tignes often gets overlooked when searching for luxury ski chalets, largely due to its big sister, Val d’Isere. This season I have added Tignes to my French Alps portfolio. But why?
The ski terrain
The ski resort of Tignes comprises of five 5 villages: Val Claret, Tignes le Lac, Le Lavachet (which are close together), Tignes Les Boisses and Tignes-les-Brévières further down the valley, at the dam. Les Brévières is the old village, whilst the others were developed as part of the hydroelectric Tignes Dam build in the Isère valley and the development of the ski resort. Many of its lifts are fast six or eight person chairlifts. The resorts height above sea level and the help of 113 snow cannons makes Tignes the perfect choice for snow-sure skiing. It has a long ski season opening early in October, and you can ski until the beginning of May. Skiers have free access to eight ski lifts to warm up and practice their moves before venturing on the superb slopes of the Espace Killy Tignes-Val d’Isere ski area.
For the 1992 Winter Olympics, the dam was painted, with the help of a number of mountain climbers and one of the largest frescoes in the word, with a picture of the ultimate strong man, Hercules. After the dam submerged the original village, the new resort was re-developed during the 1960’s.
The resort provides high quality fitness and wellness facilities and beauty treatments. You need not travel far from the slopes to indulge in the après ski nightlife of Tignes where one will find a variety of restaurants, brasseries, bars and nightclubs. Tignes is ideal for a family holiday, a breakaway for friends or large group of corporates. Access to activities is endless, so no need to worry if you are not a skier. Backcountry skiing, bungee trampoline, cross-country skiing, dog sledding, helicopter tours, heli-skiing, ice driving, ice climbing, ice driving, ice skating, indoor sports, mountain biking on snow, mountain walking, micro light, mogul skiing, mountaineering, paragliding, rider park, 9 slalom courses, snake gliss (mini boarder cross), snow kiting, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, speed riding, sledging piste for children are all part of a long list of activities available in resort.
The new wave of luxury ski chalets
Higher up the valley of the Espace Killy you will find chalets fit for a king. Hallways adorned with original Chanel prints, charcuterie caves, swimming pools carved into rocks and that all needed heated outdoor kitchen for Al’ fresco dining. Until two years ago, Tignes was rather on the back burner and you would be lucky to find an outdoor Jacuzzi. Located lower down the valley you will find chalets with toys for the young and the old, Jacuzzis the size of small swimming pools with 3D TV’s, artwork fit for museums and cutting edge technology.
Welcome to Tignes. The new wave of luxury.
