Icelandic discount airline Play applies to fly to U.S.

Startup discount Icelandic carrier Play has applied for permission to begin U.S. commercial and charter operations in 2022.

Play has not said specifically which U.S. gateways it plans to service, but in its Aug. 20 application to the DOT, the airline said that it intends to begin operating flights between Iceland and the East Coast next summer.

Play commenced operations just two months ago with service between Reykjavik and London Stansted Airport. The carrier plans to cross the Atlantic in single-aisle Airbus A321neo planes with an all-economy configuration of 192 seats.

Norse Atlantic Airways

Another startup discount carrier, Norse Atlantic Airways, also intends to begin U.S. operations next year. The nascent carrier says it will be flying 15 Boeing 787 Dreamliners between mainland Europe and the U.S. by next spring.

Play and Norse Atlantic hope to fill in the low-cost transatlantic void that has been left by the exit of Wow, Norwegian and others.
