Flight attendant reveals what to avoid when booking flights if you want upgrades

When it comes to bagging a free upgrade there are plenty of hacks and tricks, from knowing the right things to say (and with confidence), to choosing your outfit wisely before you even set off.

However, it turns out you may have sealed your fate the moment you made your booking – and one former flight attendant has spilled the beans.

Nick Loukas, who was a member of cabin crew at Qantas, revealed that if you pre-order a special meal such as a veggie or gluten-free option, you could significantly decrease your chance of that elusive upgrade.

He told Business Insider : "If there’s a special meal request in your booking, the airline won’t even look at you (for an upgrade).

"Because you’ve got a dietary requirement, and they might not be able to cater for you if they upgrade you.

Now obviously for some people there isn’t a choice – if you have an allergy or dietary requirement and it’s a long flight, you don’t want to risk going hungry.

Of course if you really want to put the odds in your favour for an upgrade, you may want to consider packing your own food and drink for shorter flights.

That way if you do manage to bag a free upgrade you’ll have a back-up if they can’t cater to your dietary requirements.

Or you can hope that they still have a few special meals left over on the day you travel – but that’s a lot of what ifs.

Alternatively, you could book your special meal, get comfortable in your Economy seat and then ask cabin crew for some of the in-flight extras most people don’t know about that could actually transform your journey into a first class experience.
