How to avoid 10 days quarantine after your holiday

Quarantining simply isn’t an option for many Brits who may have to get back to work as soon as they arrive back in the UK after going on holiday. So how can you go on a summer break abroad and avoid quarantining when you return to the UK?

The rules on foreign travel are centred around the government’s “traffic light system.”

This system analyses how “safe” it is to travel to certain countries, and takes into account how much of the population has been vaccinated, the number of Covid cases in each country and how well a country is managing any outbreaks.

Those countries deemed safe to travel to are given a ‘green status’; those countries on the green list are the only destinations you can travel to without needing to self-isolate when you return to the UK.

Countries on the amber or red list should not be travelled to for non-essential reasons, meaning holidays to these countries should be off the cards.

If you do need to travel to an amber list country you must quarantine when you return and take two COVID-19 tests.

Red list countries mean you must quarantine in a hotel and take two COVID-19 tests when you come back to the UK.

The only way to avoid quarantining after going on vacation abroad is to go on holiday to green list countries.

So, which countries are currently on the government’s green list?

Green list countries:

Options for foreign travel are limited, there are just 11 destinations on the green list to choose from:
Australia
Brunei
Falkland Islands
Faroe Islands
Gibraltar
Iceland
Israel and Jerusalem
New Zealand
Singapore
South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands
St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha

An update on the traffic light system is expected in the afternoon so, this list could soon be expanded, all of the lists are reviewed every three weeks, as part of the government’s traffic light system.

Ministers have come under increasing pressure from the travel industry to lift restrictions, this could mean that popular European holiday spots such as Greece and Italy could be put onto the green list soon.

It is worth noting that while some countries may be on the UK’s green list, meaning you do not have to quarantine on your return to the UK, some of these countries will require Brits to quarantine upon entry into their country, travel to Australia for example is currently off the cards for most Brits as the Australian authorities have banned almost all international arrivals.

So, if a country is on the green list this does not guarantee a quarantine free stay, always check if your intended destination is enforcing Covid restrictions before you travel.
