The Scottish lochs are world-famous for their beauty and the most famous, Loch Ness, is also shrouded in mystery. In the Highlands, water is everywhere and the lochs provide breath-taking scenery wherever visitors look.

Loch Maree, in Kinlochewe, is one of the most beautiful loch holidaymakers can visit.

Mountain reserve established in 1951 and the Loch Maree Islands are the UK’s oldest National Nature Reserve.

Loch Affric by the secluded village of Cannich, is considered one of the most beautiful glens in Scotland.

The deepest loch in Scotland, Loch Morar, allows visitors to walk a nine-mile route along the loch and to take a ferry back.

In the Queen’s estate of Balmoral, visitors should head to Lock Muick. Queen Victoria was a fan of the scenery, and the nearby mountain of Lochnagar is a favourite of Prince Charles.

For a bit of history, visitors should go to Loch Tay, with settlements dating back to the Iron Age. The Scottish Crannog Centre has a reconstruction of crannogs, man-made Iron Age living spaces.

Loch Awe is popular for trout fishing. The ruins of a castle on Innis Chonnell and Kilchurn, a historic Clan Campbell stronghold are well worth a look.

To get a ferry to the Orkney Isles is already an exciting adventure for visitors.

The two “lungs” of Orkney’s Mainland, Lochs of Harray and Stenness, are separated by a narrow causeway.

Orkney is well worth a visit with its UNESCO World Heritage Sites and incredible history.

The Ring of Brodgar and the Standing Stones of Stenness are just the beginning.

Two of the most famous lochs in Scotland are must-see attractions.

Loch Ness, of course, does not need introduction. With Urquhart Castle and legends aplenty, a visit to the Highlands would not be complete without a stop here.

Loch Lomond, the largest loch in Scotland is also the UK’s largest body of freshwater.

With the pandemic hitting the world, The Grand Tour had to shelve plans to film in Russia and go a little closer to home: Scotland.

Swapping far-flung, exotic locations for a staycation, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May head to the Highlands with three classic 70s American cars.

The three don’t bland in “terribly well,” but as they head off on “the most beautiful drive we’ve ever done,” spirits are high.

With the beautiful Scottish Highlands as a backdrop, the Clarkson, Hammond and May’s adventures may give staycation inspiration to viewers.
