The announcement was made by president, Pedro Sanchez whilst attending the closing of a major economic summit in Barcelona. The decision will need to be endorsed next Thursday at an extraordinary meeting of the Council of Ministers and will come into effect on June 26th.

Mr. Sánchez made the revelation during the XXXVI annual meeting of the Cercle d’Economia.

“We do it for the Spanish, who have been disciplined all this time; for the great work of the health workers and that of so many companies and professionals in the face of the pandemic, to whom we thank; and we do it because we are complying point by point the milestones and objectives that we have set ourselves,” he said.

The wearing of face masks indoors and outdoors, with some exceptions, was approved last July.

Although health experts have welcomed the move, saying the constant wearing of masks had been causing widespread anxiety and distress, they will still need to be worn in closed spaces by all over the age of six.

This will include:

• Air, sea, bus, or rail transport, as well as other public transport

• Interior of shops and restaurants

• Gyms and sports facilities

• Any closed space for public use or that is open to the public

• Closed theatres and spaces dedicated to culture

• Any closed public space that cannot guarantee safe distance

Failure to comply with the obligation to use masks will continue to be considered a minor offence and sanctioned with a fine of up to 100 euros.

Spain is one of the most popular holiday destinations for Britons year after year – but the country is currently on the UK’s amber list, meaning returning holidaymakers face a 10 day quarantine.

However, many hope the country will be moved to green this summer, and the updated face mask rules in the country do provide hope for this outcome.

The Government has pledged to review the travel lists every three weeks or so.

This would put the next review on Thursday, June 24, however, nothing has been confirmed as yet.

While mainland Spain is less likely to make the green list, its islands are in with a chance thanks to low infection rates.

Canary Islands

The Canary Islands include top holiday spots like Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Tenerife.

The islands have a Covid rate of 38.4, with 47.8 percent of the population having received a first dose of the vaccine.

With sprawling beaches, bustling nightlife and rustic towns, it could be a return to the Canary Islands is on the cards soon.

Balearic Islands

Another hotspot which includes Majorca and Ibiza, the Balearics could be a green list destination soon.

On the islands, the rate of Covid is 21.7, while first dose vaccinations stand at 45.7 percent of the population.
