The heartbreaking, last flight prior to this United crew losing their jobs was captured on video by a passenger. This FA is one of 16,400 @united employees who will be furloughed or laid off within the next few days. The United furloughs include 6,920 flight attendants, 2,850 pilots and more than 4,000 operations staff & technicians. Roughly 1,400 employees in management roles will also be laid off. American Airlines will furlough 17,500 workers on Oct.1, including 8,100 flight attendants and 1,600 pilots. What a sad, yet sincere and loving message from a @united flight attendant who is obviously passionate about his job and passengers. We are sending our love to all affected, and hope to see travel back to “normal” soon & better than ever. As a former flight attendant myself, I’ve got your back. I know it’s not much, but I will do all I can to help get the word out. ❤️✈️

The travel sector has been one of the worst hit industries amidst the coronavirus pandemic with countries making international travel near impossible in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19. In the UK, cabin crew workers have been amongst those who have been devastated by the sudden loss of jobs.

This has been particularly true of flight attendants working for well-known names such as British Airways and Virgin Atlantic, many of whom were let go by airlines despite years of service.

However, a similar impact has also been felt across the pond in the US.

President Donald Trump made the decision to shut borders, meaning Americans can not fly abroad on holiday, nor can international residents enter the country.

US airline United has been the latest to announce furlough measures and job losses to many of its crew members.

For many, this has meant losing a dream job and what one cabin crew member describes as “a once in a lifetime opportunity”.

The unnamed flight attendant was filmed on what would be his last flight before he had to spend months on the ground waiting to hear about the fate of his much-loved job role.

In a video filmed by a passenger, the crew member shares his hopes for the future as he fights back tears.

“I just wanted to say that although it doesn’t always seem like it, it sincerely has been a pleasure flying the friendly skies with all of you for the last few years,” he said.

“And while I refer to all of you as passengers rather than customers because I sit up here on the aircraft with you, and not at our corporate office, at the end of the day you all spend your hard-earned money here and you are paying customers, and without that, we would not have been afforded the luxury of a once in a lifetime opportunity so for that I thank you.

“Wherever your future travel plans might take you, I ask that you come back to United so that we can come back. And I hope that when I see you again it’s under better circumstances.

“But if it’s not for you, or you are not travelling for a happy occasion, I know that the rest of my United family will be here for you. Thanks again.”

Express.co.uk has contacted United for comment on the job losses.

Although not a “passenger shaming” moment, the clip has been shared by Instagram account @PassengerShaming, who offered their sympathies to the crew member.

A caption alongside the video reads: “The heartbreaking, last flight prior to this United crew losing their jobs was captured on video by a passenger.

The video has already been viewed 186,000 times at the time of writing, with hundreds of travellers sharing their support in the comments section.

One fellow cabin crew member wrote: “As an airline employee myself for 33 yrs I’ve cried all day as I read and watch so many of our ‘family’ having to leave – we ARE family and I pray callbacks happen soon- for ALL carriers.”

A passenger commended the flight attendant’s attitude, saying: “This is the kinda energy we need to make it through 2020.”

Another added: “Oh heartbreaking.

“Much love to that crew and all the crews facing uncertain futures.”
