This week, the three celebrity foodies will be exploring the Greek capital city of Athens and getting up to their usual mischief. One of the world’s oldest cities, Athens has plenty to offer British tourists for a city break.
A highlight of any trip to Greece, the Acropolis is the most complete ancient Greek complex still standing today.
Built 2,500 years ago, it’s an incredible sight to witness the iconic buildings looming over the modern city.
The Temple of Poseidon is one of the most complete Ancient Greek temples and was built to honour the God of the Sea, Poseidon.
Tourists visiting the temple can catch fantastic sunset views through the temple’s remaining columns.
Travellers who want to see more of the city’s famous history should head to the Museum of Cycladic Art for Bronze Age marble figurines and ancient artefacts.
For culture vultures, the National Museum of Contemporary Art has Tate Modern vibes and showcases many Greek and international artists’ work.
Children will love the National Garden, a huge park first created for Queen Amalia in 1838 and filled with tropical plants.
Visitors should keep an eye out for the Garden’s many ponds, some of which even contain terrapins and turtles.
Foodies can try a traditional moussaka, an aubergine and minced beef dish covered with melted cheese.
Fried cheese, saganaki, is another must try on a visit to Athens while many tourists are tempted by the delicious smell of souvlaki meat wafting from terraces.
For a quick snack on the road to some of Athens’ many attractions, a spanakopita, or spinach pie is a great option.
Greek honey is considered some of the best in the world, due to the extensive variety of flora and fauna in the country. Tourists can try it drizzled over greek yoghurt or pick some up as a souvenir.
For more souvenir shopping and a lively bar and restaurant scene, tourists should head to Plaka.
With wafting bougainvillea and a variety of gyro options, Plaka is known for beautiful winding streets sheltered under the shadow of the Acropolis.
To relax in a traditional Greek taverna and sip some ouzo, the neighbourhood of Psiri has some fantastic choices.
The three foodies also head to Meteora on tonight’s episode of Gordon, Gino and Fred Go Greek!
The astounding rock formations host one of the largest complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries.
Not for the faint hearted, many of the monasteries can be explored by hiking or taking a taxi, but try not to look down!
Meteora means ‘hovering in the air’ and it’s easy to understand why as many of the monasteries look as though they are simply floating among the clouds.
A few of the monasteries are still inhabited today and if tourists visit the nuns at St Barbara, they should try some of the nuns’ delicious chestnut honey.
