An Indian government minister has called for the introducing of direct flights between Dubai and the city of Bhubaneswar, in order to improve the travel opportunities for the around 15,000 Indian expats who live in the United Arab Emirates and are originally from this region of eastern India.
Dharmendra Pradhan, India’s Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, on Wednesday wrote an official letter to his ministerial counterpart at the Ministry of Civil Aviation requesting the direct route be established, according to a report by Indo-Asian News Service (IANS).
Bhubaneswar is the capital and largest city of the East Indian state of Odisha.
“Keeping in mind the welfare of commuters to and from Bhubaneswar-Dubai and larger potential for development of Odisha, I request your personal intervention in launching a direct flight between Bhubaneswar and Dubai at the earliest,” Minister Pradhan said in his letter request, according to the IANS report.
The minister also said the direct route from Dubai to Bhubaneswar would help to ease the travel demand on the 15,000 Indian expats who live in the UAE who are from the state of Odisha
The IANS report said the Odia Society of UAE recently held a meeting with the general manager of Sharjah-based Air Arabia to discuss the business case for the direct route.
