Boris Johnson says travel red list is under 'constant review'

In the latest update to the UK’s red list for travel, it’s a dramatic reduction of the number of countries off-limits to travellers returning to the UK. As international travel takes a significant step to returning to it’s pre-pandemic levels, what are the countries remaining on the red list? And which countries have been removed from the red list for British travellers?

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has slashed the red list to just 7 countries, opening up a total of 47 countries to travellers.

In a series of tweets, Mr Shapps said: “UPDATE: From Monday (11th Oct) I’ll be cutting 47 destinations from our red list – including South Africa, with just 7 countries and territories remaining – all others will be included in the “rest of world” category.

“I’m also making changes so travellers visiting England have fewer entry requirements, by recognising those with fully-vax status from 37 new countries and territories including India, Turkey and Ghana, treating them the same as UK fully vax passengers.

The measures announced today mark the next step as we continue to open up travel and provide stability for passengers and industry while remaining on track to keep travel open for good.”

Thanks to the new rules, fully-vaccinated travellers arriving in the UK from countries on the ‘ROW’ list no longer need to take pre-departure tests, day eight tests, or isolate upon returning to the UK.

This has both made travel slightly easier, as well as removed some of the costs of testing, for vaccinated travellers travelling to certain countries. But what about what’s left of the red list?

What countries have been taken off the red list?

After Mr Shapps’ announcement, over 40 countries will be taken off the UK’s red list.

Mr Shapps has confirmed that South Africa will be taken off the red list, meaning travellers can return from South Africa to the UK from Monday October 11, 2021.

The countries that Brits are now free to travel to without having to quarantine upon their return also include favourite holiday hotspots Thailand, Indonesia, Mexico and Brazil.

What countries are still on the red list?

Red list countries have previously been described by Mr Shapps as “those which should not be visited except in the most extreme of circumstances”.

Following the announcement from Mr Shapps today, there are 7 countries remaining on the red list.

After returning to the UK from a red list country, travellers have to pay to quarantine in a managed quarantine hotel for 10 days, which starts from £2,285.

If you arrive in England from a red list destination without a quarantine stay booked, you can be slapped with a £4,000 fine.

However from today, only seven countries remain on Britain’s red list, including:

Ecuador
Colombia
Panama
Dominican Republic
Haiti
Venezuela
