Union Station today serves as Amtrak’s headquarters as well as operating as it’s second busiest station. 

Gare du Nord in Paris, France: Circa late-1800s

Construction of Gare du Nord began in 1846 but it got a major uplift in 1861 when architect Jacques Hittorf designed a facade, in a modern neoclassical style, decorated with 23 statues by famous sculptors.

Today, Gare du Nord is one of Europe’s busiest train station with over 200 million passengers going through its doors every year.

St. Pancras in London, UK: 1927

With its elegant train shed designed by William Barlow and the magnificent frontage of Sir George Gilbert Scott’s Midland Grand Hotel, St Pancras was the most ornate of London’s rail terminals. The hotel, however, proved difficult to adapt to the needs of the 20th century and was converted to offices eight years after this photograph was taken.
