Cities all over the world are reopening after the pandemic. Time Out’s annual ranking of the coolest city neighbourhoods has been revealed.

The ranking was a bit different this year, as Time Out “switched up their priorities”.

They wrote: “Food, drink, nightlife, culture – important. Community spirit, resilience, sustainability – just as important, especially if we are to come out of this pandemic with things we can be proud of and tell the rest of the world about.”

The first UK entry is at number four.

Leigh in Edinburgh was noted as a “cultural hotspot” with many big art institutions.

The old trade port was also lauded for its festivals, “local identity” and food scene, with The Pitt, the weekly street food market.

At number 13, London’s Dalston made an entry.

The East London neighbourhood had “everything we want”, Time Out said.

From great pubs to green spaces, Dalston also had a “moral compass”, making the best, and coolest, neighbourhood in London.

Ancoats in Manchester made the list at number 20.

Described as “so damn magical”, Ancoats’ blending of old and new was singled out as an attractive feature.

Food, community spirit and local charities, as well as cultural events made Ancoats one of the coolest neighbourhoods in the world.

At 26, Kemptown in Brighton had a “free spirit”, Time Out said.

Beach regeneration, beautiful architecture and great nightlife were more than enough for Kempton to claim a spot on the list.

The last UK neighbourhood to make the list was Ouseburn in Newcastle.

The area had plenty of places “to eat, drink, see art and dance the night away”.

It was also lauded for being “an area bursting with community spirit”.

The Ouseburn Trust was singled out for its work to improve the life of residents and preserve the heritage and ecosystem of the area.
