The British royal family may be busy attending fancy dinners, galas, tea parties, and the annual Trooping the Colour, but that doesn’t mean they don’t also make time for a vacation every now and again. And, according to Kate Middleton herself, the family has one very specific destination they love to go to for a little rest and relaxation.
According to a report in Hello! Magazine, the Duchess of Cambridge let it slip where her family likes to head off for a quick vacation from London. She made the revelation while taking part in a royal tour of Keswick, Cumbria, with her husband Prince William.
While chatting up a few members of the public, Kate reportedly told one fan that she and her family absolutely adore the Lake District in England.
“She said that it was raining a lot and was a long way from their home in Norfolk, but they love it here,” a royal fan explained, according to Hello! Magazine. The fan continued, “She said that her children love coming here and walking in the fells. She told us how nice the Lake District was and how lucky we were to live so close to the mountains.”
The Lake District, located in the northwest region of England, has long been revered for its natural beauty.
The UNESCO World Heritage Committee lauded the region by writing, “The combined work of nature and human activity has produced a harmonious landscape in which the mountains are mirrored in the lakes. Grand houses, gardens and parks have been purposely created to enhance the landscape’s beauty. This landscape was greatly appreciated from the 18th century onwards by the Picturesque and later Romantic movements, which celebrated it in paintings, drawings and words. It also inspired an awareness of the importance of beautiful landscapes and triggered early efforts to preserve them.”
Beyond the royals, the Lake District was also a favorite for many iconic authors. Those who passed through the region included Beatrix Potter, John Ruskin, and Norman Nicholson. And, royal and non-royal visitors alike can even tour the former home of poet William Wordsworth, known as Dove Cottage.
