Cruise guests have been sharing tips that “most people don’t know” on Reddit. Cruise veterans have also shared a few things that new guests might find really irritating.
Depending on the length of a cruise holiday, tourists might get to know their crew members pretty well.
According to regular cruise holidaymakers, there are a couple of things passengers can do to get better service.
Reddit user, Ecupirate09, said: “You tip your room attendant the first night of the cruise you will be taken care of.
“Also, I bring a handful of supply bags for the room attendant, the dining room waiter and assist waiter with things like gift cards, cup of noodle, shavers etc.
“They will tell others who work on the cruise and then you’ll always get heavy hand bartenders.”
Treating staff well or tipping crew members can put passengers in their good books for the whole trip.
Crew members may have been away from home for a really long time so are likely to appreciate some home comforts.
One crew member replied saying: “Cup noodle oh damn that will buy some favours for sure from most crew haha.”
Cruise newcomers were also given a tip of a surprising item to pack in their holiday luggage.
One reddit user said: “Packable hammocks on aft balconies are a game changer.”
Aft balconies are located at the very back of a cruise ship and are an increasingly popular room choice.
They said: “We bring hammock straps so we don’t mess with the paint, and as long as you pick a balcony with significant overhang from the deck above there is more than enough piping and railing to secure it to.”
Another user agreed saying: “We did this on a cruise to Alaska and it was incredible.”
Although nearly all the commenters would recommend a cruise holiday, there were a couple of “pet peeves” that guests found really annoying.
Elainya said: “I understand why they do this but it still bugs me – the constant marketing and upselling the ship does.
“When I’m on vacation I want to relax and not constantly have to tell people politely ‘no thank you’.”
Another user said: “On one cruise, we’d be woken up by advertising announcements every morning. It was awful.”
The amount of upselling onboard is likely to depend on the cruise line and how much is already included in a passenger’s package.
Another cruise veteran said they found elevator etiquette really frustrating onboard cruise ships.
They said: “Please stop trying to force so many people into an elevator that it forces people to be physically smooshed up against total strangers.”
Cruise lines are likely to be more careful about elevators during the pandemic and encourage passengers to social distance.
