Despite several delays pushing the hotel back from its initially planned grand opening in 2018, this contemporary accommodation is up to speed on all of the latest interior trends. Upon entry, guests are greeted with a chic lobby and the adjoining Freedom cafe. A neutral and earthy palette is complemented by rich jewel tones, and furnishings, while modern, have a distinct vintage feel.
The lobby also features one of Canopy’s signature city bikes – a complimentary perk that allows guests to explore the city like a local.
Canopy London City pays homage to its neighbourhood throughout the hotel, with nods to the capital’s East end everywhere, from the wall art to some of the food and beverages it has on offer.
Take the check-in desk, for example, which utilises locally made products such as beer and soda cans as a decorative feature.
Guests can choose to stay in one of six rooms; the Queen Room, Twin Room, King Room, Queen Premium Room, King Premium Room and King Junior Suite. Interior design remains consistent throughout each of the rooms, all exuding urban glamour.
And regardless of the room you choose, even your furry friends are welcome, with Canopy London City offering a selection of pet-friendly rooms.
We were lucky enough to spend our stay in the King Junior Suite.
This jaw-dropping bed and living area come complete with a chaise lounge or bespoke sofa bed, a 55-inch HD Smart TV, Nespresso Machine, mini-fridge and a huge bed with 300-thread count sheets, all set to the backdrop of an impressive view of the East London landscape.
The adjoining bathroom boasts a huge walk-in shower and complimentary toiletries. Guests can make themselves at home by slipping into the Canopy dressing gowns and slippers provided. And as an added bonus, the Canopy ensures extra cosiness with a courtesy pair of bed socks and an eye mask in the brand’s signature shade of orange.
The room alone has enough home-comforts, room service options and state-of-the-art features to keep you busy, but the hotel also offers plenty of additional amenities.
There’s a fitness centre, meeting rooms, a stylish breakfast buffet area and the beautiful Freedom Cafe. Canopy London City is also due to welcome Jewish and Middle Eastern-inspired restaurant Penny Squares and an “exclusive rooftop wonderland” Florattica, which will serve a range of dishes and cocktails, in the near future.
As the hotel’s restaurants are yet to open for business, we spend our evening dining at Cafe Freedom. By day, the cafe serves as a hip hangout offering coffee, lunch and a relaxed working environment. By night, the cafe transforms into a swanky hotel bar, boasting incredible cocktails, small plates, and an array of burgers, wraps and salads.
Although some high-end hotels don’t offer the most diverse vegetarian and vegan menus, we were blown away by the great selection of plant-based options for us to enjoy.
Among our top picks were the scorched gunpowder tea radishes, chickpea and olive Panisse, falafel and hummus corn wrap and vegan burger. For meat-eaters, our waiter assured us the mac and cheese bites, a rich combination of bacon bits and stilton, were not to be missed.

And if your dessert stomach is rumbling, there are three sweet options to choose from. We opted for the Bombay candy apple fritters, a sugary treat that felt as though it was made for a December evening.
Of course, there are also plenty of drinks to choose from, with an extensive list of spirits and liqueurs, as well as wines, beers, soft drinks and mixers.
Their signature cocktail list, however, is compact but strong.
From it, a sparkling rhubarb-infused beverage by the name of Unpretentious Realism was a particular favourite of our stay. But the good news is that even if you can’t decide which cocktail best suits your taste buds, the serving staff will be on hand to help you navigate the menu and pick the perfect drink for you.
And it is interactions like this, which really make the stay one to remember.
Canopy London City is a stunning hotel on its own, but its staff welcoming, engaging and fun staff are what truly elevated the experience for us.
From the waiting and service staff to the concierge and cleaning team, there is always a friendly face there to lend a hand – or simply have a chat.
At check-in, the concierge helped us navigate the hotel, understand a bit more about the facilities available and talk us through the features of the room.
In Freedom Cafe, the waiting staff made themselves available to make sure every last bite was up to standard, and offer their insight into the best wines and beers to compliment an electric Saturday evening.
Even after an evening of frivolity, the fun doesn’t come to an end. By morning, Canopy London City offers the most delicious breakfast buffet with an option for everyone.
Forget your standard orange juice, water, coffee and tea, this next-level hotel offers smoothies, an array of juices, teas and coffee beverages to suit every taste.
There’s a continental variety made up of fresh and dry fruit, yoghurt, cereals, cold meat and fish, cheeses and even a selection of olives and cornichons. For the hot breakfast lover, there are both vegetarian and traditional options available.
London is not short of glamorous hotels, nor is it short of cool hotels. But if you’re looking for a stay that offers a taste of both worlds, with plenty of friendly faces, then Canopy London City by Hilton is the one for you.
