Many Britons may be swapping their overseas holiday for a traditional camping trip this summer as new international travel restrictions cause uncertainty. For those heading on their first campaign expedition, some seasoned campers have heralded a warning about packing very important “extra” items.

Camping experts took to Reddit to share their top tips, revealing a good stock of socks is the way to go.

This is particularly true in the UK, where unpredictable weather can strike at any moment, even in the summer.

“[Tents] are not as waterproof as you think,” warned one commenter.

“Nothing is worse than wet socks, but nothing is better than changing from wet socks into dry socks.”

A second added: “I was going to suggest extra socks.

“Wet socks and shoes can sink a trip in the span of a day. Cold, wet, blistered feet are no fun.”

They continued: “That’s the only thing you need to bring a lot of.

“You can go weeks with the same shirt and pants, but bring a ton of socks

Another camper said: “Nothing is worse than having to put on wet, dirty socks on in the morning.”

Luckily, for those caught short by a sudden downpour, a camping enthusiast offered their own personal tip for speedily drying out shoes and socks.

“Stuff a couple of sheets of newspaper in wet shoes,” they wrote.

“A they’ll be dry enough to wear in half an hour.”

Meanwhile, basic household items can also be a lifesaver should the clouds roll in.

“You can save the bags from loaves of bread for your feet, they tend to work well and fit nicely,” wrote a Reddit user.

However, it seems socks aren’t just an essential for when you’re out about on holiday.

“For cold weather, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS put on clean, dry socks when you go to sleep,” wrote one camping enthusiast.

“Whether you realise it or not, at the end of the day, your socks are sweaty.

“If you sleep in those socks, your feet will FREEZE.

“Just put on a clean pair when you go to bed.”

Even in the summer months, once the sun begins to set, temperatures are likely to drop rapidly.

Luckily, for those who are concerned about catching a chill in a tent, there are plenty of alternative camping options for first-timers.

According to, one of the most popular “glamping” options this year are treehouses. “We analysed the most popular camping trends on our site and, by measuring page views against overall availability, we have highlighted which camping holidays people need to book earliest for 2021,” said a expert.

“Coming out as the top trend campers need to book now if they want to secure a spot for summer is treehouse accommodation.

“Staying in a treehouse property is a unique and luxury option which makes you feel in the heart of nature, and the demand for this incredible option far outweighs the availability.”

However, interested holidaymakers will need to book soon.

The expert warned: “Based on our analysis we anticipate there are around 1,624 customers interested to every one treehouse available.”
