Travel: Factors lowering the risk of COVID spread on flights
There are whispers of home among the travel industry that holidays could resume in 2021 after a year of struggles due to the coronavirus pandemic. Ahead of this, a team of experts have rounded up the 20 “safest” airlines for 2021, as well as the 10 “safest” low-cost carriers.
Among them are plenty of UK airlines including British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Ryanair and easyJet.
Experts from AirlineRatings.com evaluated airlines based on a number of statistics and audits.
These include airline’s crash and serious incident record, audits from aviation’s governing and industry bodies, government audits, industry-leading safety initiatives, and fleet age.
Though several UK airlines were named, it was an Australian carrier which took the crown for the “world’s safest airline 2021”.

Qantas took the top spot in the “20 safest airlines” thanks to the development of new technology including real-time monitoring of its engines across its fleet, flight data recorders to monitor plane and crew performance, and the use of a Global Navigation Satellite System to aid automatic landings and precision approaches around mountainous areas.
Qantas was followed by Qatar Airways, Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines, Emirates, EVA Air, Etihad Airways, Alaska Airlines, and Cathay Pacific Airways.
UK flag-bearer British Airways came in 10th place.
AirlineRatings.com Editor-in-Chief Geoffrey Thomas said all of the airlines named were “standouts in the industry” whom “are at the forefront of safety, innovation, and launching of new aircraft.”
