Celtic Manor Resort: The ultimate spa weekend for your relaxing visit to South Wales

Built above the site’s original 1860 manor house, Wales’ most luxurious resort hotel – which was completed in 1999 after owner Sir Terry Matthews invested a staggering £100million into its development – leaves a lasting impression on you from the minute you arrive.

A short drive along the manor’s winding driveway leads you directly to its triple-winged resort hotel where you will be greeted by a friendly concierge who will guide you into the hotel’s foyer, which screams sophistication. Look up towards the ceiling and you’ll gaze into the building’s impressive domed skylight as the balconies of the manor’s six floors all descend towards the foyer’s open lounge. The seating area itself is flanked by two sophisticatedly carved, ominous looking dragons – a hark to the country’s national emblem.

To your left sits the manor’s Olive Tree & Garden Room, offering spectacular views of the resort over a buffet breakfast, while Merlins Bar lies behind the foyer, offering a relaxing after-dinner experience with expertly-crafted cocktails, mood lighting and soothing music.

The building boasts an impressive three wings featuring a staggering 330 luxurious rooms for you to choose from. Its grand suites offer copious amounts of space and a grand queen size bed which guarantees you a perfect night’s sleep. Featuring an all-marble bathroom, with a separate bath and a walk-in shower, the resort’s rooms ooze class. Complimentary wine and a carefully crafted handmade chocolate selection, along with an eclectic minibar and a comfortable lounge area, really help to unwind on this idilic spa weekend.

As you step out onto the balcony of the suite you’ll be met with mesmerising views the resort’s Roman Road Course, one of the manor’s three sprawling championship golf courses in its vast 2,000 acres. It’s no wonder the Celtic Manor has played host to some of the world’s biggest names, from Barack Obama and other leading political figures at the G8 summit in 2014, to Colin Montgomerie and Rory McIlroy in 2010’s Ryder Cup.

The Celtic’s sibilantly-styled Steak on Six restaurant, appropriately placed on the hotel’s sixth floor, offers a fantastic fine dining experience that you will not forget.

Poised over a hilly backdrop, Steak on Six offers views like no other, with diners able to look out over the impressive private woodlands the manor has to offer. And if those views aren’t enough, as the evening takes hold, the city’s streetlights snake through the Welsh countryside like a sidewinder through sand.

Opt for the pan fried scallops to start and you will be presented with two delicious bits of fish accompanied by beautifully braised pork dusted with a hazelnut brittle, bringing a sweet, crunchy contrast to the tender meat and fish.

But perhaps the food the restaurant should gain most of its plaudits for, is its array of succulent steaks. From sirloin to T-bone, the eatery lives up to its name with its selection of matured cuts. And if that’s not enough to be impressed by, the warm, welcoming staff offer you a selection of carefully hand-crafted steak knives – all with their own unique twist and moniker – to cut through your meat.

The ‘Jack Sparrow’ knife, beautifully designed like a pirate’s sword, effortlessly cuts through the succulent Irish fillet. The £36.50 tender beef, cooked medium rare, practically melts in the mouth as the juices burst on the palate. Accompanied with a béarnaise sauce, steak fries and sautéed broccolini with a chilli and garlic dressing, each priced at £3.60, the expertly cooked meal, accompanied with the terrific view and relaxing ambiance, is worth every penny. Choose a bottle from the restaurant’s expansive wine list to help wash it down, we recommend the Malbec.

If you’re vegetarian or vegan, the menu can appear a little daunting with a clear lack of options to suit your needs. However, just let the accommodating kitchen staff know before hand, and they will thoughtfully prepare a delicious dish to cater to your preferences. The chef’s wild risotto is charmingly presented with sun-dried, crispy tomato shavings, leeks and edamame beans, all stewed in a delicious white wine sauce.

The Celtic Manor also boasts the award-winning Forum Spa; for a day of pampering and tranquility. The spa itself is adorned with Roman-style columns and tiles, reflected in the large circular pool.

One can also take a dip into the jacuzzi before enjoying the communal steam room and sauna. For those who prefer a little more privacy, there are male and female only facilities; including a cold plunge pool if you’re feeling brave.

The spa includes treatment rooms and the stylish Champagne and Beauty Bar. A friendly team is on hand to help tailor your treatment; whether it be a manicure, makeover or a facial wax.

Gentlemen are also catered for, with a wide variety of treatments to choose from. The beauticians are more than happy to answer any questions while helping with the tough decision of choosing the perfect colour!

Take a drive through the breathtaking Welsh countryside, where the hills cascade and the River Usk gushes through. Just a short 15 minute drive away from the manor sits the delightful Newbridge on Usk. This boutique hotel and restaurant, once owned by presenter Chris Evans who, as our incredibly knowledgable driver Kevin enthusiastically informed us, fell in love with the building on a visit, slots perfectly into the peaceful landscape.

Perched on the side of the impressive 102km river, the inn offers impeccable views of the tranquil scenery, with blossom trees overhanging on the bank and the water gently flowing beneath a medieval bridge, it is the perfect place to stop for a peaceful lunch in the sun.

With the set menu at two courses for £15.95 or three for £19.95, the restaurant offers reasonable prices for an appetising lunch experience. We recommend the Goat’s Cheese Mousse as a light starter, followed by the Welsh Featherblade of Beef with creamed potatoes. And if you’re feeling really indulgent, the Banana Eton Mess is a mouth-watering twist on this classic dessert.

And if you have the time, make sure you take a visit to the city’s impressively preserved Roman village Caerleon, situated just a short drive from the Celtic Manor. The village boasts astounding archeology built by the settlement, from Caerleon’s Roman Fortress and Baths to the Isca Augusta – a site home to a miniature amphitheatre which takes you back to AD 90, picturing some of the brutal battles which would have taken place in the very spot you’re standing on.
