Best value flight destinations for 2023 holidays from Madeira to Bulgaria

Plenty of Brits are starting to look online to find their next holiday destination.

Those who like to plan ahead are already searching for the perfect place to fly for summer 2023.

But, the cost-of-living crisis means most holiday obsessives are having to ensure the price doesn’t come in too high.

Luckily, Skyscanner has looked at popular holiday destinations for the next year and discovered the 10 best value locations.

These are the holiday hotspots that have actually seen the cost of a flight drop to below pre-pandemic cost rather than climb, so you can feel assured that you’re getting a decent deal when booking one.

The best value destination according to the study was the Portuguese island of Madeira – and it's one that's firmly on our travel wishlist.

The gorgeous island is filled with lush green cliffs, turquoise waters and pretty red-roofed towns.

In 2022 the cost of an average flight to Madiera was just £130 – that’s a 22% price drop since 2020.

We’d recommend checking out Funchal for its beautiful promenades, delicious cuisine and even dolphin and whale watching.

Next up was Melbourne, Australia, with the long haul destination seeing a drop in price of 19% since pre-pandemic.

Flights are still expensive at an average of £1,334, but those who want to shell out for a once-in-a-lifetime trip down under could do so for a lower cost than usual.

Melbourne is the capital of the state of Victoria in southeast Australia and it has plenty to offer holidaymakers.

There’s a vibrant food and drink scene – there’s plenty of street food from hot donuts to Bahn mi – and a strong sports scene.

Sydney was another Australian destination that made the list coming in at number seven.

The third best value destination was found to be Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria.

A stunning Balkan capital the city has thousands of years of history to get stuck into from Roman ruins around the St George Rotunda church to medieval and ottoman decorations and architecture.

The average cost of a flight to Sofia was just £112 in 2022 – an 18% drop since before the pandemic.

Check out the Aleksander Nevski Cathedral before heading to the National Museum of History, relax in the pretty gardens and squares or head to the National Gallery to dive into the art scene.

There’s classic opera and ballet on offer in the city too.
